Tareq Ezzedeen was the head of the media office and spokesman for the Islamic Jihad Movement in the West Bank, and one of the military operations leaders of the Al-Quds Brigades in the West Bank. He was arrested in 2001 due to his activities in the First Intifada, participation in suicide operations, and presence in the battle to defend the Jenin camp. He was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 10 years and 8 months. He was released in the Wafa al-Ahrar deal in 2011 while suffering from leukemia. He was killed at dawn on Tuesday, 9 May 2023, in an assassination operation by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, alongside Khalil Bahtini, a member of the military council and commander of the northern region of the Al-Quds Brigades, and Jihad Ghanam, secretary of the military council, commander of the southern region, founder, head of training and financing of the Al-Quds Brigades. He was killed in his apartment along with his two children, "Myar" and "Ali", while his wife and one of his sons were injured.
Biography
Tareq Ibrahim Ezzedeen was born on 14 September 1974 in the town of Arrabah in the Jenin Governorate in the West Bank. He was married and had three sons and two daughters.
Education
He completed his primary and secondary education in the town of Arrabah. He obtained a bachelor's degree in political science from a university while imprisoned in occupying prisons, and later obtained a master's degree.
Activities
Ezzedeen was involved in national resistance from an early age and was among those who participated in the activities of the First Intifada. He joined the Islamic Jihad Movement and participated in its national activities, later joining its military branch.
Collaboration in Suicide Operations
He participated in a suicide operation carried out by Ola al-Tabaa and Usama Darwish on 25 May 2001, in revenge for the assassination of Iyad Hardan, one of the leaders of the Al-Quds Brigades, the military branch of Islamic Jihad.
Participation in Operations
He also participated in the battle to defend the Jenin camp in 2002 and carried out a number of operations.
Responsibilities
He took charge of managing the Voice of Prisoners Radio. He also worked in the media office of the Islamic Jihad Movement in the West Bank and was the spokesman for the movement in the West Bank. In 2018, he was elected as a member of the political bureau of the Islamic Jihad Movement. He is one of the leaders of the military operations of the Al-Quds Brigades in the West Bank, whom occupying forces accused of activating the work of armed cells affiliated with the brigades in the West Bank.
Arrests
During his struggle, Ezzedeen was arrested five times by occupying forces and was wanted during the First Intifada. He was then arrested in 2001, and occupying forces subjected him to severe interrogation. He was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 10 years and 8 months. He was released in the Wafa al-Ahrar deal in 2011 while suffering from leukemia.
Death
Tareq Ibrahim Ezzedeen was killed at dawn on Tuesday, 9 May 2023, corresponding to 18 Ordibehesht 1402 SH, in an assassination operation by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.[2] He was killed alongside Khalil Bahtini, a member of the military council and commander of the northern region of the Al-Quds Brigades, and Jihad Ghanam, secretary of the military council, commander of the southern region, founder, head of training and financing of the Al-Quds Brigades. Reactions of the Islamic Jihad Movement and Hamas Movement
Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement in a statement referring to the criminal action of the Zionist regime in targeting a number of commanders of this movement in Gaza stated that full responsibility for the terrorist and cowardly crime in the Gaza Strip lies with the Zionist regime and stated: "The Palestinian response to this massacre will not be delayed and Al-Quds Brigades and other resistance groups will not fall short in avenging the pure bloods and the enemy Zionist will not be able to achieve its goals through committing crimes; because the ranks of the resistance are united and integrated and its positions are firm. Also, Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas in a statement while condemning the criminal attack of the enemy Zionist on Gaza and the martyrdom of a number of Palestinians including the martyrdom of Jihad Shaker Ghannam, Tariq Muhammad Izz al-Din, Khalil Salah al-Bahatini, from the commanders of the resistance offered condolences: "We offer condolences for the martyrdom of the resistance commanders in Gaza and emphasize that the Zionist enemy will pay the price for its crimes and these crimes will never weaken the determination and will of the nation of Palestine to continue the path of resistance. We in Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas with pride and glory and faith in continuing the path of resistance offer condolences to the nation of Palestine and the Islamic Ummah and Arab [nation] for the martyrdom of three senior commanders of Islamic Jihad, namely Martyr Jihad Shaker Ghannam, Martyr Khalil Salah al-Bahatini and Martyr Tariq Muhammad Izz al-Din and a number of other Palestinian citizens most of whom were women and children. Full responsibility for this crime and its dangerous consequences lies with the enemy Zionist occupier. We emphasize again that the crimes of this regime against the residents of Gaza, West Bank, Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque will never bring security for it and cannot achieve its sinister goals and this regime will pay a very heavy price".
