Viewpoint

Condemnation of Israel's Attack on Qatar

Dr. Sudarnoto, Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), condemning the attack by the Israel on Qatar, stated: The army of the Israel carried out an airstrike on Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, and claimed to have targeted the leadership of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, who were reportedly discussing a ceasefire proposal. He called upon the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to take concrete steps to support the Palestinians' struggle for independence. He described the Zionist airstrike as provocative, intimidating, illegal, and inhumane. Therefore, he asked the member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to unite and respond collectively and decisively to the actions of Israel. He referred to Israel's reckless actions that ignore international laws and arbitrarily attack the soil of independent countries, such as the recent attack on Qatar which violated that country's sovereignty.

He emphasized that Israel's attacks on various countries constitute a violation of international laws, the United Nations Charter, and basic humanitarian principles, and that Israel acts arbitrarily, feeling that it is always protected by the United States and its allies, including through the veto mechanism in the UN Security Council. Dr. Sudarnoto said: Israel's attack on Doha demonstrates political frustration stemming from the increasing isolation of the Zionist regime in the eyes of the world, particularly as a result of the aggression and occupation of Gaza, which has led to over 63,700 casualties. He added: He hopes that this situation will lead to the creation and strengthening of unity and solidarity among Islamic countries, encouraging them to unite and take concrete and decisive actions in support of the Palestine struggle. He said: I believe that this attack can be a catalyst for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and its member countries to strengthen their political, diplomatic, and even economic power to defend Palestine more effectively.

Therefore, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation must be united; there should be no room for division. Because Palestine needs real support, not just expressions of sympathy through statements. He also called on the international community, including non-Muslim countries, to view Israel's aggression as a serious threat to global security and world peace. Sudarnoto said: Palestine has been a symbol of the humanitarian struggle, and if the Israel is allowed to continue its crimes, the international legal order will collapse[2].

Condemnation of the Gaza Siege

The Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Dr. Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, strongly condemned the decision by the Israel to ban the activities of dozens of international humanitarian organizations, including doctors and medical personnel in Gaza, describing it as an oppressive, inhumane action contrary to the basic principles of international humanitarian law. In a written statement on Saturday, 3 January 2026, he said: Banning the entry of aid workers and medical staff into Gaza not only indicates a complete disregard for humanitarian values but also shows that Israel is consciously and deliberately using the suffering of civilians as a tool for political and military policy.

Sudarnoto stated that given the conditions in Gaza, which has been devastated by prolonged Israeli aggression, blocking humanitarian aid is a form of collective punishment explicitly prohibited by international laws. He emphasized that the security logic that the Israel constantly cites lacks moral or legal legitimacy, and on the contrary, existing realities show that this pretext is used to cover up systematic crimes against humanity, including the destruction of medical centers, the massacre of medical staff, and cutting off civilians' access to food, medicine, and basic services. He said: This action once again confirms that Israel's aggression against Gaza has gone beyond the boundaries of armed conflict and is equivalent to serious crimes against humanity and genocide.

Compliance with Geneva Conventions and International Law regarding Gaza

Sudarnoto stated: Medical personnel and humanitarian organizations in Gaza must be fully protected under the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law, and any attempt to obstruct, criminalize, or expel them from conflict zones constitutes a war crime for which they must be held accountable. The Deputy Head of International Relations and Cooperation of the Muhammadiyah Institute (LHKI) stated: Tolerating the actions of the Israel only reinforces the culture of impunity and double standards in the implementation of international law. He issued several important calls in this regard:

  1. He called upon the United Nations (UN) and all relevant international mechanisms to take immediate and decisive action, not just issue statements, to ensure full and unconditional access of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
  2. He called upon the Government of Indonesia to continue playing a stronger moral and diplomatic leadership role globally to hold the Israel accountable for its crimes against humanity.
  3. He called upon the international community, religious institutions, and global civil society to reject all forms of normalization, justification, and silence regarding crimes against humanity occurring in Palestine.
  4. He emphasized that defending the people of Palestine is a global moral call and a constitutional duty of the Indonesian nation.

Sudarnoto concluded: As long as Israel continues to commit acts that violate the right to life, dignity, and humanity of the people of Gaza, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) will continue its condemnation and encourage the fight for justice in all national and international forums[3].
