Sami Hamdan Awad Abu Zuhri is a Palestinian politician who spent years in the prisons of the occupying regime and is the official spokesperson for the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). He was born in Gaza and holds a PhD in Islamic history, and was arrested and imprisoned by Israel from 1989 to 1994.


Birth

Sami Abu Zuhri was born on 5 Esfand 1346 (24 February 1968) in Gaza City, Palestine. He is married and has 6 children.


Education

  • He completed his education in Palestine and received a BA in History and Archaeology from the Islamic University of Gaza in 1998, and in 2003 received a Master's degree in Islamic History from the same university with a thesis on "Jews of Medina in the Medinan Era".
  • Since 2000 CE, he has been working as a lecturer in the Department of History and Archaeology at the Islamic University of Gaza.
  • He received a PhD in Islamic History with honors and the thesis: "Saladin in Contemporary Arab and Frankish Sources, A Comparative Study of Him" from the University of Damascus, Syria, in 2009 CE.
  • He has two peer-reviewed articles in the Journal of Historical Studies at the University of Damascus, the first titled "Saladin's Relationship with Nur ad-Din Zangi in Contemporary Arab and Frankish Sources" and the second titled "Saladin's Relationship with the Abbasid Caliphate".
  • He has completed several training courses in computer science, internet fundamentals, and university teaching skills.


Responsibilities

  1. From 1994 to 1998 CE, he served as the head of the Student Council at the Islamic University of Gaza.
  2. He currently teaches as an Assistant Professor for undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of History and Archaeology at the Islamic University of Gaza. and former director of the Oral History Center.
  3. In 2003, Abu Zuhri began working as the director of the Oral History Center at the Islamic University of Gaza and a member of the board of directors of the Palestine newspaper, and then became an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Archaeology at the University in 1382 SH. Political Activity

Abu Zuhri engaged in the struggle against occupation from the beginning and was arrested by the army of the Zionist regime and spent from 1989 CE to 1994 CE in captivity and prisons of the occupiers. He was among hundreds of Hamas members who were deported to Marj al-Zuhur in southern Lebanon in 1992, where he spent a full year in exile.

  • Published a book titled History of Martyrdom Operations during the Prophethood and Rashidun Caliphate.
  • He has a non-peer-reviewed study titled "Security Approach to the Prophetic Biography" which was published in the book In the Path of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman.
  • He has many political articles.
  • He published books and studies on the Palestine issue.
