Salah Bardawil was a co-founder of the Islamic National Salvation Party, representative of the National and Central Councils of the Palestine Liberation Organization, one of the oldest media leaders of Hamas, a member of the Hamas political bureau in Gaza, head of the Internal Planning Office abroad for Hamas, lecturer at Al-Aqsa University and Islamic University of Gaza, and a member of the Palestine Writers Union. He was killed at dawn on Sunday, 23 March 2025 (CE), corresponding to 22 Ramadan 1446 AH, equivalent to 3 Farvardin 1404 SH, during an attack by Israeli fighter jets on the Gaza Strip, after the violation of the Gaza Ceasefire 2025 by Israel. While performing the "Tahajjud prayer" with his wife inside a refugee tent, he was prostrating in the Al-Mawasi area west of Khan Yunis city when he was killed.


Biography

Salah Bardawil was born on 24 August 1959, in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in the south of the Gaza Strip, into a Palestinian refugee family originally from the occupied village of Al-Jura in the Gaza Strip district.


Education

He completed his primary and secondary education in schools in Khan Yunis and then graduated in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in Arabic language from the Faculty of Dar al-Ulum at Cairo University. He completed his master's degree in Palestinian literature at the Institute of Arabic Studies and Research in Cairo in 1987, and obtained his doctorate in the same field in 2001 from Sudan.


Academic Activities

He began his academic activity in 1985 as an elementary school teacher, and then between 1990 and 1993, he worked as a lecturer at Al-Aqsa University, from where he transferred to teach at the Islamic University of Gaza. He was a member of the Palestine Writers Union and supervised the establishment of the National Thought and Culture Forum.


Political Activities

Bardawil joined the Muslim Brotherhood early in his life and became active in support, social, and institutional fields. With the establishment of Hamas in late 1987, he joined the movement and actively participated in its national activities. In 1996, he was one of the founders of the Islamic National Salvation Party and headed its media section, and was a representative of the National and Central Councils of the Palestine Liberation Organization. He participated in the first round of talks between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority in Sudan, and in 2006, representing the Khan Yunis governorate, he participated in the parliamentary elections on the Change and Reform bloc list affiliated with Hamas and won a seat in the Palestine Legislative Council. He also held the responsibility of the foreign relations portfolio in the parliamentary bloc and rapporteur of the political committee and membership in the monitoring committee in the Legislative Council. In 2017, he was elected as one of the members of the Hamas political bureau in Gaza and took charge of the National Relations Office, the body responsible for communications and coordination with Palestinian factions. In 2021, he was transferred back to the political bureau and then selected as the head of the Internal Planning Office abroad.


Imprisonment

In 1993, he was arrested by Israel and interrogated for more than two months in Gaza and Ashkelon prisons, and his house was destroyed several times in Israeli attacks on Gaza.


Media Activities

Bardawil was one of the oldest media leaders of Hamas in Gaza. In 1996, he established the "Al-Risala" newspaper as the first official media outlet of Hamas and served as its editor-in-chief. He wrote weekly satirical articles titled "From the Streets of the Homeland" in the same newspaper, which were a combination of politics, social realities, and criticism of officials. These writings led to his repeated arrest by the security services of the Palestinian Authority. He also headed the Hamas media office and supervised the management and development of the movement's media.


Relationship with Hamas Leaders

Bardawil had close connections and cooperation with prominent Hamas leaders, including the former leader of Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, former commander-in-chief of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, and Yasser al-Nimrati, the first commander of the special unit[1].

Bardawil, a member of the political bureau of the Hamas Movement, emphasized: Yahya Sinwar, the new leader of this movement in the Gaza Strip, is among the experienced national leaders in the political arena and is interested in achieving reconciliation and compromise. Salah Bardawil, a member of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), emphasized in an interview with Al-Aqsa TV network: There are numerous signs of Yahya Sinwar's success in his upcoming mission, the most important of which is his belief in national unity and relations with other groups. He is an advocate of national reconciliation. He added: Sinwar is a personality who supports Arab nationalism and wishes well for neighboring Arab countries, especially Egypt, and this issue will have many repercussions in terms of expanding Hamas's foreign relations, which Ismail Haniyeh initiated.

He continued to emphasize that Yahya Sinwar is an experienced and knowledgeable individual in the political arena and was a member of the Hamas leadership cadre and a representative of prisoners in the prisons of the Israel, and after leaving prison, he engaged in political activities, but Hamas does not change with the change of its leader. He added: Perhaps people were not familiar with him closely; because after leaving prison, he was busy with his social life and therefore, was not present in public much. This Hamas leader also referred to the efforts of Israel to create fear and terror regarding the new Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip and said that he will have a wider presence in the media arena in the future. Bardawil clarified that the focus of Israel on Hamas personalities and leaders is an attempt to harm this movement and its overall leadership; such that some parties try to limit Hamas to the personality of its leader. He added: Sinwar's rise to power is a decision that the Hamas movement made based on its own laws and internal regulations, but one should not focus too much on the personality of this movement's leader and lose sight of the process of his selection and the reference that selected this leader[1].


Martyrdom

Hamas Movement

The Hamas Movement in a statement offered condolences on the martyrdom of Dr. Salah Bardawil, a member of the political bureau of this movement, and announced: Dr. Salah Bardawil, who was one of the prominent figures in the political, media, and national arena and was a symbol of honesty, steadfastness, and sacrifice, went to meet the Lord while performing night voluntary prayers. He never neglected his duties in the way of jihad and service to the cause of Palestine and remained steadfast on the path of resistance until the last moment, until on one of the nights beloved by God, he attained the honor of martyrdom. Hamas emphasized that the pure blood of Dr. Bardawil, his wife, and other dear martyrs acts like a lamp that will illuminate the path of freedom and return for everyone, and the enemy's crimes will never be able to weaken our will and steadfastness. With the martyrdom of every martyr, the flame of resistance becomes more fervent until the occupation ends. At the end of this statement, Hamas asked for divine mercy and the highest paradise for Dr. Salah Bardawil and his wife. Also, it wished patience and reward for the survivors, friends, and the patient people of Palestine.

Palestinian Legislative Council

The Palestinian Legislative Council also condemned the martyrdom of its representative, Salah Bardawil, as a new crime against the people and leaders of Palestine and appreciated his influential role in serving the cause of Palestine and the Palestinian nation.

Activists and Social Media Users

Activists and social media users reacted to the symbol and sign of Bardawil's martyrdom while prostrating. He attained martyrdom while he was with his wife in "Tahajjud prayer" inside a refugee tent. Many considered this scene of martyrdom a divine honor for a fighter who had been active in the political and media arena in the Hamas Movement for years. Some users considered this symbolic martyrdom a crushing response to allegations that claimed Hamas leaders are not with the people of Gaza and have fled this area[2].
