Anwar Ibrahim is the tenth Prime Minister of Malaysia, succeeding Najib Razak. In the 2022 general election, his coalition of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) parties secured the largest number of seats. On 24 November, he was appointed Prime Minister by decree of Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, the King of Malaysia. From 1990 to 1998, he served as Deputy Prime Minister under Mahathir Mohamad. Due to disagreements with Mahathir, he was dismissed and convicted on charges of moral corruption. He was imprisoned twice, in 1998 and 2015, serving a total of ten years, before finally receiving a royal pardon from the King of Malaysia and being released in 2018.

Biography

Anwar Ibrahim was born on 10 August 1947 AD.

Political activities

He began his political career as a student activist in 1971 AD with the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement, known by the Malay acronym "ABIM", and later led protests against rural poverty and other socio-economic issues.

Alliance with Mahathir Mohamad

His activities convinced Mahathir Mohamad, the then Prime Minister, to invite him to join the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the ruling party within the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which had governed Malaysia since its independence in 1957 AD.

Deputy Prime Minister

Anwar rapidly rose through the ranks, becoming Minister of Finance and, in 1990 AD, Deputy Prime Minister. He gained a reputation as a charismatic, ambitious, and reformist politician.

Dismissal from the Deputy Prime Ministership

However, as the Asian financial crisis deepened, Mahathir turned against the man he had chosen as his successor. In September 1998 AD, Anwar was dismissed. The reason for his dismissal was Anwar's audacity in accusing Mahathir Mohamad of awarding massive government contracts to his friends; following this action, Mahathir was accused of nepotism. Subsequently, Anwar was expelled, and through Mahathir Mohamad's efforts, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of moral corruption, a move widely seen as an attempt to humiliate Anwar.

Charges of moral corruption

In 1998 AD, he was charged with moral corruption. Thousands poured into the streets of Kuala Lumpur, and Anwar, who claimed the charges were politically motivated, was arrested. He spent six years in solitary confinement without access to his family and was released in 2004 AD.

Participation in the 2013 election

Anwar contested the 2013 AD election against the ruling coalition, then led by Najib Razak. Although he did not win the election, he garnered significant support, alarming Najib. Utilizing the judicial system, Najib once again charged Anwar with moral corruption, the same offense for which he had previously served six years in prison. In 2015 AD, he was sentenced to imprisonment again. In total, he spent approximately ten years in prison until he finally received a royal pardon from the King of Malaysia and was released in 2018 AD[1].

Tenth Prime Minister of Malaysia

In the 2022 AD election, Anwar Ibrahim, leading the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, secured the largest number of seats. However, no single party or coalition achieved the majority of 112 parliamentary seats required to form a government. Following this result, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, the King of Malaysia, announced that Anwar would become Prime Minister, as he commanded the support of a majority of the 222 members of the Malaysian Parliament. The Sultan added that Anwar would take the oath of office at a ceremony at 5:00 PM on 24 November at the palace[2].

Views and Perspectives

Europe's Duality on the Palestine Issue

Anwar Ibrahim, at a joint press conference with the Chancellor of Germany, stated: Malaysia's foreign policy is very clear and has not changed, as it stands against colonialism, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and forced displacement in any country, whether in Ukraine or Gaza. Scholz also said: We support the right of the Zionist regime cabinet to defend itself against Hamas; Anwar Ibrahim responded: What is the reason for this hesitant and contradictory stance toward one race versus another? Where is your humanity?[3].

The West's Attempt to Distort the Gaza War

Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, emphasized at the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Grand Mosque meeting that the Western world must cease its attempts to control international media to present false narratives regarding the Gaza War. At this meeting, held in Kuala Lumpur with the theme of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Palestine, he stated that the West does not need to teach the Islamic world the meaning of democracy, human rights, and sustainable development. The Malaysian Prime Minister continued at this meeting, saying that Western countries must correct the narrative and accept that the unrest in Palestine did not begin due to the Hamas attack on October 7, but rather started in 1948 CE and has continued since then. Anwar said: We must be transparent and cannot be agents or followers of Western countries that wish to start the narrative from October 7. He expressed the view: Continuous destruction (in Palestine) occurred starting from 1948 CE, followed by a direct assault on Al-Aqsa Mosque in 1969 CE. Indeed, destruction, both in terms of infrastructure and human life, along with genocide, is continuing now. This is what has happened. Anwar added: Malaysia is committed to not allowing companies registered in the Israel (occupied territories) to enter and conduct any kind of activity in this country[4].

True Promise, Iran's Legitimate Action

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, in response to the extensive missile and drone response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the aggressive actions of the Zionist regime, described it as a legitimate action. In a statement, he declared: Following the savage attack by the Zionist regime on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Iran's launching of drones was a legitimate action. This statement was issued after Anwar chaired a meeting of the Malaysian National Security Council to discuss rising tensions in West Asia. The Malaysian Prime Minister also emphasized: The Israel must not engage in any further retaliation that would escalate tensions in the Middle East. He clarified: The key to resolving this issue is the immediate resolution of the inhumane situation in Gaza. Therefore, global attention must be fully and undeviatingly focused on it. He added: There must be a sustainable ceasefire that enables the path for humanitarian aid. Anwar also reminded the international community not to neglect the goal of ensuring the freedom of Palestinians and their rights to have their own land, as any deviation from such a goal is precisely what Israel desires. He also emphasized that the actions of the Zionist regime are intended to divert the attention of the international community from the cruel and grossly inhumane actions in Palestine[5].

Malaysia Requests to Join the BRICS Organization

According to the Bernama news agency (the official news agency of Malaysia), Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, announced that the country has sent its request to join the BRICS organization to Russia. In a statement released by the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office, Anwar Ibrahim, while expressing his desire for membership in BRICS, said that this matter was the focus of his discussion with Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, during their meeting today at "Seri Perdana," the residence of the Malaysian Prime Minister. He said: Malaysia has sent its letter of request to join the BRICS organization to Russia, as the current chair of the organization, and furthermore, has expressed its willingness to participate as a member country or strategic partner in this organization. On June 18, the Malaysian Prime Minister expressed and confirmed his desire to join BRICS during a conversation with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil[6].
