Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei is the third Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the martyrdom of the Leader and high-ranking Marja, Grand Ayatollah Imam Sayyid Ali Khamenei. Grand Ayatollah Khamenei is an instructor of advanced levels at the Hawza and holds the chair of Kharij lessons in Jurisprudence and Principles, whose robust innovations in the system of Hawza sciences, particularly Jurisprudence, Principles, and Rijal, along with possessing coherent intellectual foundations in codified Islamic sciences and commitment to these foundations in scientific productions, and the brief exegesis of verses of the Holy Quran at the beginning of the Jurisprudence lesson, are counted among his prominent distinctions.

Biography

Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the martyred Leader and Marja, Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, was born in the year 1348 SH, in Holy Mashhad.

Education

He completed his high school education at Alavi School and began preliminary Hawza lessons at Ayatollah Mujtahidi Tehrani School. In 1368 SH, he traveled to Qom to complete his Hawza studies and resided in this city until early 1371 SH. Then, he returned to Tehran for five years and continued his Hawza studies there. In 1376 SH, he married the martyred lady Zahra Haddad Adel, and in the same year, for the second time, in order to complete his studies and benefit from scientific and spiritual graces, he migrated to Qom.

Presence at the Front

Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, during the Sacred Defense, joined the fighters of the Habib Battalion from the Hazrat Muhammad Rasul Allah Division (peace be upon him and his progeny) at the Jihad fronts.

Instructors

Grand Ayatollah Khamenei learned advanced level lessons from the presence of Ayats Ahmadi Miyanaji, Reza Ostadi, Osta, and a group of other prominent professors of the Qom Hawza. He studied Kharij lessons of Jurisprudence and Principles under his martyred father, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, as well as Grand Ayats Shaykh Javad Tabrizi, Shaykh Husayn Wahid Khorasani, Sayyid Musa Shubayri Zanjani, Aqa Mojtaba Tehrani, and Shaykh Muhammad Mu'min Qomi. He attended Kharij lessons of Jurisprudence and Principles continuously and actively for over 17 years. Presenting scientific reports in the Arabic language and pursuing scientific discussions through objections, critiques, and conversations outside of lessons with instructors, caused special attention from some of the Hawza elders towards him.

Scientific Genius

His innate genius and talent, along with effort, perseverance, precision, and scientific freedom, have led to the production of robust innovations in the system of Hawza sciences, particularly Jurisprudence, Principles, and Rijal. Possessing coherent intellectual foundations in codified Islamic sciences and commitment to these foundations in scientific productions is counted among his prominent distinctions. Innovation in foundational discussions such as the reality and nature of religious rulings, levels of rulings, criteria of rulings, multiplicity of rulings, return of restrictions, method of transmitting hadith knowledge, and the evolution of jurisprudence books, has led to the formation of a comprehensive scientific school. His mastery over the jurisprudential-principled schools of the greats of this science, from Shaykh al-A'zam Ansari to Imam Khomeini, has added to the richness of this school. Special attention to the works of the companions of the Imams (peace be upon them) and the opinions of the early scholars of the Imamiyyah school, especially the issue of "accumulated knowledge of the Infallible Era (peace be upon them)" and its role in the inference process, is among the indicators of his scientific method.

Teaching in the Hawza

Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, alongside his studies, was continuously engaged in teaching. He began teaching preliminary Hawza lessons at Ayatollah Mujtahidi School in Tehran and from 1374 SH, began teaching Maʿālim. Following the recommendation of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei regarding the necessity of transformation in the Hawza and the importance of the works of Martyr Sadr, he stopped teaching Maʿālim and turned to teaching Martyr Sadr's Ḥalaqāt. Upon migrating to Qom in 1376 SH, he entrusted the continuation of teaching Ḥalaqāt to one of his study partners. In 1377 SH, he began private teaching of Risālah and Makāsib in the honorable house of Imam Khomeini in Qom. Some time later, he held private Kharij lessons on Prayer, Tasbihat Arba'ah, Prostration, and Bowing, with the presence of a group of former students. In 1383 SH, he again began teaching Ḥalaqāt, and in the years 1384 SH and 1385 SH, he taught advanced levels (Makāsib) in one of the schools of Qom. In 1386 SH, his lesson was transferred to Faydiyyah School, and in 1387 SH, the private Kharij lesson on Prayer was established in the office of Grand Ayatollah Khamenei in Qom. From the beginning of the academic year 1388 SH, the public Kharij lesson of Jurisprudence and from 1389 SH, the Kharij lesson of Principles was officially started and continued until the beginning of the discussion of Istishab.

Teaching Method

Prior to teaching, he would write down the course of discussion and his scholarly viewpoints, and after teaching, he would personally organize the jurisprudential and principles of jurisprudence materials, some volumes of which are ready for publication. Although the lecture notes of his courses were prepared for publication by his students, due to personal refusal, they have not been published publicly so far and have only been made available to certain elites and scholars of the seminary. In the style of predecessor scholars, part of the class time was dedicated to intimate gatherings with students. Among his innovations was the brief interpretation of verses of the Holy Quran at the beginning of the fiqh lesson, which was considered to contain novel and deep interpretive points. Special attention to students' objections, even after the end of the lesson and in the form of long conversations, as well as planning for the scientific presentation of sub-branches by students, played an important role in fostering critical power and practicing inference^[1].

Third Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran

In an extraordinary session of the Assembly of Experts for Leadership, Ayatollah Sayed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei (may God protect him), was determined and introduced as the third leader of the Sacred System of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful Noble and free nation of Islamic Iran, greetings and blessings of God be upon you. The Assembly of Experts for Leadership, while expressing condolences for the martyrdom of the Great Leader His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Imam Khamenei (may God sanctify his pure soul) and other precious martyrs, especially high-ranking and devoted commanders of the armed forces and students of the Shajareh Tayyebah school in Minab county, and condemning the savage aggression of the criminal America and the vile Zionist regime, informs that this Assembly, immediately after the news of the martyrdom and heavenly ascension of the wise and sagacious Leader of the Islamic Revolution was released, despite severe wartime conditions and direct threats by enemies against this popular institution and the bombardment of the Secretariat offices of the Assembly of Experts for Leadership which led to the martyrdom of several staff members and the security team of this complex, did not hesitate for a moment in the process of selecting and introducing the leadership of the Islamic System and according to the duties stipulated in the Constitution and internal regulations of the Assembly of Experts, placed the necessary measures and preparations for holding the extraordinary session and introducing the new leader on its agenda; therefore, appropriate planning and necessary coordination for the gathering of the honorable representatives of this Assembly, who are present in the farthest points of the country, were carried out so that despite the intelligent provisions in Article 111 of the Constitution for the formation of a temporary council, the country would not face a leadership vacuum. The Assembly of Experts for Leadership, honoring the high status of Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist in the era of the Occultation of His Holiness Wali-e-Asr (may God Almighty hasten his noble reappearance) and the importance of the leadership issue in the Islamic Republic System, honors the 47 years of wise governance based on the principle of honor, independence, and authority of the two Imams of the Revolution and while commemorating the memory of those divine and popular leaders, announces that this Assembly, after precise and extensive examinations and utilizing the capacity of Article 108 of the Constitution, in accordance with religious duty and the belief in being present before God Almighty, in today's extraordinary session determines and introduces Ayatollah Sayed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei (may God protect him) as the third leader of the Sacred System of the Islamic Republic of Iran, based on the decisive vote of the honorable representatives of the Assembly of Experts for Leadership. In conclusion, with appreciation of the members of the Temporary Council of Article 111 of the Constitution, it invites the entire noble nation of Iran, especially the elites and intellectuals of the seminary and university, to pledge allegiance to the leadership and maintain cohesion around the axis of Velayat, and requests from His Lordship the continuation of the grace and favor of God Almighty upon this country and the great people^[2].

Leader of Shia of Bahrain

Ayatollah Isa Qassim, leader of Shia of Bahrain, in a message congratulated the selection of Ayatollah Mujtaba Khamenei as the third leader of Islamic Republic of Iran. In this message it states: O God, endless thanks and boundless praise be to You who granted great success and vast and generous grace to the faithful people of Iran and the Islamic Ummah and Faith on earth, due to the decisive vote and defense of all officials from the blessed Velayat of the worthy faqih, the just, son of the Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyid Mujtaba Hosseini Khamenei and great hope for the continuation of the stability of the government and its monotheistic line which leads only to closer proximity to the Dear God and the situation of this secure country and faithful Ummah, God willing, leads only to victory, honor, cohesion in the way of God, security, good, and blessing. Grand Mufti of Oman

Sheikh Ahmed al-Khalili on his personal page on the social network X, while condemning the American-Zionist attack on Islamic Republic of Iran, wrote: We were very happy about the quick selection of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei as the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran and we congratulate this selection. He added: We hope that he too will continue the path of his father in helping the nation of Palestine and confronting declining Zionism. Sheikh al-Khalili added: May God protect His Muslim servants everywhere in His grace and kindness^[4].

Hezbollah Lebanon

The resistance movement Hezbollah Lebanon, regarding the selection of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, emphasized in a statement its adherence to the best successor of the Leader of the Martyrs of the Ummah Imam Khamenei (May God be pleased with him), who was martyred after decades of struggle and wise leadership in preserving the path of the Islamic Revolution and dignity, independence, and power in confronting Global Arrogance. Hezbollah, greeting the blessed efforts and historical and legitimate responsibility of the Assembly of Experts of the Islamic Republic in these conditions of criminal American-Israeli aggression against Iran, congratulated the selection and leadership of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the Guardian of the Affairs of the Iranian Nation, and stated that this wise selection is a crushing message to the enemies of Islamic Republic and the enemies of the nation, and Iran, under the shadow of His leadership, will not be intimidated by aggressive Terrorism, and efforts to weaken this revolution and the steadfastness of the Iranian nation, and the blood of the martyrs, will be neutralized as always.
