Talaat al-Shennawi was among the first generation of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. He served as the head of the administrative office of the Brotherhood in Dakahlia. His insistence on steadfastness and continuing on this path led to him spending 18 years in detention, ordered by Gamal Abdel Nasser against Muslim Brotherhood forces.
Biography
He was born in 1935 CE, in the village of Senfa, Mit Ghamr, Dakahlia, Egypt, and had 14 brothers and sisters. He attended Al-Qarya Primary School and then Al-Sinbillawin Secondary School. He was arrested during his secondary school years when he was only twenty years old. After his release, he retook the secondary school exams. While submitting his documents to Dar al-Mu'allimin (Teachers' College), he was arrested again and was unable to enroll. After his release in 1970 CE, he submitted his documents to Dar al-Ulum Faculty again and was accepted, graduating in 1974 CE. Afterwards, he worked as an Arabic language teacher for the preparatory stage. He then went to Yemen, and upon his return, worked as a secondary school teacher until 1994 CE. He then joined Al-Huda and Al-Nur private schools in the city of Mansoura, until his position reached the General Supervisor of Schools.
Collaboration with the Muslim Brotherhood
The Brotherhood had a famous battalion in the village since the early 1940s CE, and started its work there, raising its flag over the headquarters. He says: "Among the characteristics of the Brotherhood in this period was the call to Jihad and the defence of Muslim sanctities, especially since this call was accompanied by the Palestine war, and I was only thirteen years old at that time. I usually attended the Tuesday lectures where Hassan al-Banna spoke at the General Centre in Cairo. Senior leaders of the Brotherhood spoke about the villages and other countries and their situation. We felt a great sense of responsibility towards our nation. All of this led me to join the Brotherhood".
First Year of Detention
He was arrested for the first time in 1955 CE, when he was barely twenty years old. On the first night of detention, he completed the recitation of the Quran. This occurred following widespread arrests ordered by Gamal Abdel Nasser against the Muslim Brotherhood.
Death
After years of imprisonment and support for the Muslim Brotherhood, he finally passed away in 2015 CE.
