Jabr Ammar, known by the kunya "Abu Ali", was one of the prominent figures of the Palestine resistance and one of the leaders and fighters of the Palestine Liberation Army and one of the veteran fighters against the Israeli occupiers. After enduring 40 years of captivity and exile in the prisons of the Zionist regime, Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia, and Sudan, he returned to Gaza shortly before the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. During the wide-scale invasion of the Zionist regime into the Gaza Strip, after the violation of the 2025 Gaza Ceasefire by Israel at dawn on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, corresponding to 17 Ramadan 1446, equivalent to 28 Esfand 1403 SH, he was injured and received treatment for a few days until on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, corresponding to 24 Ramadan 1446, equivalent to 5 Farvardin 1404 SH, he attained martyrdom.


Biography

Jabr Ali Abdullah Ammar was born in 1944 CE, in the village of Beit Daras. His father, Ali Abdullah Ammar, was martyred by the Zionist criminal gang during the 1948 invasion.


Education

He completed his university education in the Arab Republic of Egypt, at the Faculty of Commerce.


Struggle Activities

Ammar was one of the prominent figures of the Palestine resistance and one of the leaders and fighters of the Palestine Liberation Army, which was founded by Ahmad al-Shuqayri. He was a veteran fighter against the Israel and was present in many battles with the army of the Zionist regime.


Captivity and Imprisonment

Due to leading the activities of the Palestine Liberation Army against the Israeli occupiers, he was imprisoned for the first time in 1969 CE by the Zionist regime, and after arrest, he established the first Islamic Movement organization inside the occupation prisons. During his captivity, he was distinguished by his revolutionary zeal against the jailers and his wise leadership over the prisoners and detainees. After 14 years in Israeli prisons, he was released in 1983 CE as part of a prisoner exchange agreement, and after release, he was exiled to Lebanon and moved between Algeria and Tunisia until he settled in Sudan, and was transferred among those who were evacuated to the Gaza Strip following the bloody events in Sudan. In 1969 CE, he was arrested for the second time by the occupying forces of the Israel and sentenced to death and then life imprisonment[1].


Release and Return to Palestine

He returned to Gaza shortly before the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, and after returning, he was welcomed at the Rafah Border Crossing by official and factional figures, and there he expressed his unparalleled joy at returning to the homeland after 40 years of absence and continuing the unparalleled story of struggle in the contemporary history of Palestine, and declared: I do not fight them because they are Jews ... They are criminal killer Zionists. Yahya Sinwar, head of the office of the martyr of the Hamas Movement, was also present at the welcoming ceremony for Ammar and praised Jabr Ammar's words about the necessity of fighting the Zionists.

The late leader Ismail Haniyeh, former head of the Hamas Political Bureau, immediately contacted Ammar after his return to Gaza and congratulated him on his return to the Gaza Strip after 40 years of absence. Haniyeh, in this telephone call, praised Sheikh Jabr Ammar's sacrifices, enduring long years of exile in defense of the homeland, and his steadfastness in adherence to principles. He described Ammar as a symbol of heroism, sacrifice, and the founder of Islamic activities in prisons in the 1970s and 1980s.


Martyrdom

Jabr Ammar, the national leader and released prisoner, during the wide-scale invasion of the Zionist regime into the Gaza Strip, after the violation of the 2025 Gaza Ceasefire by Israel at dawn on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, corresponding to 17 Ramadan 1446, equivalent to 28 Esfand 1403 SH, was injured and received treatment for a few days until on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, corresponding to 24 Ramadan 1446, equivalent to 5 Farvardin 1404 SH, he attained martyrdom[2].

Reactions

Al-Nasser Salah Al-Deen Brigades

The Al-Nasser Salah Al-Deen Brigades, the military wing of the Palestine Resistance Committees, mourned the great national martyr and released prisoner Jabr Ammar "Abu Ali", who attained شهادت after being injured in the savage bombardment by the رژیم صهیونیستی on the path to liberating بیت المقدس and مسجد الاقصی. He had a life full of generosity, جهاد, resistance, and study, which played a major role in consolidating the ideology of Islamic jihadist resistance. These brigades emphasized that the crimes of the occupiers and the cowardly assassinations of our leaders and fighters will never break the will of our people and their resistance, and will not prevent them from continuing the path of jihad and resistance and continuing the path of the righteous martyrs to continue the path until victory, liberation, and their eventual passing.

Hamas Movement

The جنبش حماس in a statement offered condolences to the فلسطین nation and the Arab and Islamic Ummah on the martyrdom of Jabr Ammar (Abu Ali), one of the national figures and released Palestinian prisoner. The movement emphasized that Martyr Jabr Ammar attained شهادت following savage attacks by the رژیم صهیونیستی on the نوار غزه which targeted civilians, patients, and the wounded in hospitals and displacement centers.

The statement stated: He was among the pioneers of the resistance after 1967 AD, and spent 14 years of his life in the prisons of the Zionist regime. After his release in the prisoner exchange agreement in 1983 AD, he continued his struggle and lived in exile for years until he was finally martyred in Gaza. Hamas emphasized that the continuation of war crimes and genocide by the Zionist regime led by نتانیاهو and his extremist cabinet, including savage bombardments, killing of civilians, and assassination of Palestinian leaders, will never lead to the realization of the occupiers' goals. Hamas at the end of its statement, congratulated and offered condolences on the martyrdom of Jabr Ammar and other defenders of Palestine, Gaza, قدس and مسجد الاقصی, honored their memory, and asked for divine mercy and forgiveness for them[3].
