He served in the Palestinian National Council and the Palestinian Legislative Council from 1996 to 2006, and following the Fifth Fatah Conference in 1989, he became a member of the Fatah Revolutionary Council. Abu Ali Shaheen embodied hope and patriotism for the Palestinian people in the finest manner. He was a fighter who struggled for his homeland and its just cause, distinguished by his steadfastness and tenacity in combat, as well as his ability and wisdom in building connections.
Overview
Abdul Aziz Ali Shaheen was born on a rainy day in 1941 in the village of Bashshit, in the Ramle District of Palestine. His father was martyred in 1948 following the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes. From an early age, Abdul Aziz Shaheen experienced the hardships of poverty, hunger, and orphanhood. He completed his primary education at UNRWA schools in Rafah and continued his secondary education at public schools in the city of Khan Yunis, graduating in 1960. His uncles were killed during the occupations of Gaza in 1956 and 1967 and were buried in a well-known mass grave in the city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.
Fatah Movement
Abu Ali Shaheen joined Fatah in January 1962 in Doha, Qatar. Later, in late 1982, he undertook the establishment of the Fatah Youth Movement within the homeland. Subsequently, he began his military work with Fatah – Al-Asifah in 1967 at the Hama Camp in Syria. He spent 15 years in Israeli prisons, during which he served as the representative of Fatah (Fatah) among the prisoners, 12 of which were spent in solitary confinement.
Arrest and Imprisonment
Abu Ali Shaheen engaged in a rare militant experience, moving through the cities and villages of the occupied territories until his arrest on 4 Shahrivar 1346 SH (August 26, 1967), when an explosive device was found in his possession. Abu Ali Shaheen was among the first generation of Fatah that ignited the revolution and made the impossible possible in Palestine. Having experience in armed struggle inside the occupied territories, he tirelessly worked to establish military bases. Among his efforts were fostering revolution within the occupied territories and recruiting revolutionaries into the ranks of Fatah; he remained active from 1967 until his arrest. Abu Ali Shaheen remained in Israeli prisons from the date of his arrest until his release on September 23, 1982, spending fifteen years behind bars, twelve of which were in solitary confinement. He served as the representative of the Fatah prisoner movement in the prisons. During this period, Abu Ali oversaw the establishment of the Fatah Youth Movement in the homeland in late 1361 SH (1982). From his arrest on 4 Shahrivar 1346 SH until 3 Bahman 1347 SH, investigations continued incessantly. He passed through all interrogation centers, enduring various forms of torture during his detention. However, due to his refusal to confess and his steadfast resistance, he confounded the Zionist intelligence system, which, despite its racism and extensive networks, required evidence. On 17 Mordad 1348 SH (August 8, 1969), he was sentenced to fifteen years of actual imprisonment on charges of membership in Fatah and carrying weapons. He was released on 23 Azar 1361 SH (December 14, 1982). Abu Ali Shaheen endured detention experiences even more brutal than before; such experiences served to strengthen the resolve of a fighter. While imprisoned, he managed to establish a significant status and influence among the people. As one of the leaders of Fatah and the fedayeen, his influence on Palestinian prisoners throughout his incarceration, particularly during the last six years when he gained renown, was profound, with his directives holding great importance in their lives. While Abu Ali was imprisoned, the prisoners carried out their most severe hunger strike in 1970 in Ashkelon Prison under his leadership. Following his release, Abu Ali Shaheen was placed under house arrest from December 1982 to May 1983 at his home in the Tell al-Sultan camp in Rafah. He was then exiled to the Dahiniya area. In the east and south of the city of Rafah, Palestine, the Israeli High Court decided solely to expel him from the country on charges of threatening Israeli security, effectively exiling him to southern Lebanon, where he remained from May 1983 to February 1985. In 1985 and thereafter, he moved to Jordan. He was arrested in Jordan from April to October 1986 and subsequently exiled to Iraq.
