The Al-Fanar Media
Al-Fanar Media is an independent nonprofit news organization specializing in education, research, and culture in the Arab region. Uniquely focused on higher education and cultural developments, it publishes all content in both Arabic and English to serve a broad audience. The organization aims to provide reliable, independent reporting on successes, challenges, and models of excellence across Arab academia and society, offering rich context and analysis often missing from regional media. It also acts as a platform to bring together like-minded individuals and holds government authorities accountable for policies affecting education and research (Al-Fanar Media, 2024)[1].
Establishment and Founders
Founded in 2013 as a project under the Alexandria Trust, a London-based nonprofit dedicated to advancing educational access and quality in the Arab world, Al-Fanar Media was created to fill a gap in independent coverage of Arab higher education. David L. Wheeler, former managing editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education, has played a significant leadership role, with Rasha Faek serving as Senior Editor. The platform also engages and mentors journalists across the region in responsible reporting (Alexandria Trust, 2013[2]; Al-Fanar Media, 2024)[3].
Mission and Vision
Mission
To provide balanced, accurate, and independent coverage of academic life and educational issues in the Arab world. The organization champions academic freedom, monitors equitable access to education for women and minorities, encourages public debate, and supports informed policymaking by providing reliable information in both Arabic and English. It also seeks to inspire and train journalists covering education (Al-Fanar Media 2024[4], ; Alexandria Trust, 2013[5]).
Vision:
To be an essential resource and a catalyst for positive change in Arab higher education and research, fostering stronger, more equitable societies through informed dialogue, transparency, and the promotion of academic freedom (Al-Fanar Media, 2024)[6].
Goals and Objectives
- Deliver independent, analytical journalism focusing on education, research, and culture in the Arab region.
- Provide rich context and critical analysis of academic issues, policies, and societal challenges.
- Publish content in both Arabic and English to maximize accessibility.
- Serve as a platform for dialogue among educational institutions, researchers, policymakers, and the public.
- Convene roundtables and discussion forums on higher education challenges.
- Support and train journalists in accurate and ethical coverage of Arab education and research.
- Maintain neutrality by avoiding political or religious positions while promoting freedom of speech and academic freedom.
- Ensure sustainability through funding from foundations like the Ford Foundation, Carnegie Corporation, and Open Society Foundations without accepting payments for publications (Al-Fanar Media, 2024[7]; Alexandria Trust, 2013[8]).
History
Al-Fanar Media was launched in March 2013 as the first signature project of the Alexandria Trust, a London-based nonprofit founded in 2011 by Egyptian businessman and philanthropist Salah Khalil and a group of Arab business leaders. The Trust was created to support world-class standards of education in the Arab region. Al-Fanar Media was conceived to fill a critical gap in independent news coverage and analysis of higher education and academic freedom in the Arab world. It was designed to offer balanced and insightful reporting, host discussions on key issues, and train journalists specialized in education coverage (Alexandria Trust, 2013[9]; Al-Fanar Media, 2024[10]).
Location
Al-Fanar Media operates primarily as an online bilingual publication (Arabic and English) and is based in London, United Kingdom, through its parent organization, the Alexandria Trust. It covers the Arab region extensively but its organizational base remains in the UK (Alexandria Trust, 2013[11]; Al-Fanar Media, 2024[12]).
Financial Sponsors
Al-Fanar Media receives financial support from multiple philanthropic foundations committed to educational and social development, including:
- The Ford Foundation
- The Carnegie Corporation of New York
- The Open Society Foundations
- The Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development
- The United Nations Democracy Fund
These sponsors provide grants that enable Al-Fanar Media to maintain editorial independence and not accept payments in exchange for publishing articles (Al-Fanar Media, 2024; Alexandria Trust, 2013[13]). Website and Contact Information

- Contact details and further communication options are available through their website’s contact page (Al-Fanar Media, 2024)[14].
Key Fields of Concentration (Research)
Al-Fanar Media concentrates on education, research, and culture in the Arab region, with special emphasis on higher education issues. Its research focus includes academic freedom, quality assurance, gender, student affairs, faculty issues, curriculum, scientific research, technology and online learning, refugee education, and access to scholarships. The organization also catalogs and shares scholarship and fellowship opportunities available to Arab students and scholars, enhancing access to educational resources (Al-Fanar Media, 2023[15]; Advocacy Assembly, 2025[16]).
Activities and Contributions
Al-Fanar Media produces independent, bilingual (Arabic and English) journalism covering academic life across the Arab world. It convenes panel discussions, roundtables, and workshops focused on topics like executive education, upskilling, and challenges facing universities. The platform has been instrumental in training Arab journalists on education reporting through workshops – such as the 2014 training at Koç University in Istanbul that enhanced journalists’ abilities to report on education and academic research. Moreover, Al-Fanar has launched special sections dedicated to refugee education and media literacy projects for university students supported by grants from institutions like the Ford Foundation. These efforts foster informed discussion, improve journalism quality, and elevate the profile of education issues in the region (Al-Fanar Media, 2014[17]; Al-Fanar Media, 2023[18]; Advocacy Assembly, 2025[19]).
Publishing/Significant Reports
Al-Fanar regularly publishes news articles, analyses, and resource bulletins addressing major developments in Arab higher education, scholarships, and research policy. Notable topics include crises in Lebanon’s higher education system, environmental education highlighted at UN conferences, scholarship announcements, and government education initiatives in Iraq and the UAE. It also produces reports and resource guides, such as a media literacy manual designed to combat misinformation among students. Its scholarship database serves as a critical resource for Arab students seeking funding and study opportunities globally (Al-Fanar Media, 2023[20]; Al-Fanar Media, 2025[21]).
Impacts
Al-Fanar Media has significantly increased the visibility of higher education issues in Arab journalism where coverage was previously scant. By training journalists and supporting a network of education reporters, it has improved the quality and quantity of education reporting in the region. Its bilingual format and regional focus foster cross-border dialogue among academics, policymakers, and students. Additionally, initiatives like refugee education coverage have drawn attention to marginalized groups’ educational challenges, influencing stakeholders and donors. The media literacy program aims to equip youth with critical skills needed in the digital age, amplifying Al-Fanar’s educational impact beyond reporting into capacity building (Al-Fanar Media, 2014[22]; Advocacy Assembly, 2025[23]; Al-Fanar Media, 2023[24]).
Prominent Research Figures
Al-Fanar Media actively collaborates with a broad network of Arab educators, researchers, and thought leaders whose expertise and voices are regularly featured in its reporting and commentary. While it does not single out specific individuals as “prominent research figures,” the platform emphasizes working closely with academics and experts across diverse fields related to education, research, and culture in the Arab world to offer rich context and nuanced analysis (Al-Fanar Media, 2024). The editorial team commissions and mentors many journalists and experts, fostering a community that includes influential scholars who contribute to discussions on topics such as academic freedom, educational access, and cultural developments.
Relations to the Islamic World
Al-Fanar Media’s focus on the Arab region inherently connects it to societies where Islam is a major cultural and social influence. The media outlet covers education, culture, and research in predominantly Muslim societies but maintains a neutral stance on political and religious issues, emphasizing academic freedom and freedom of speech as fundamental to civil society. It provides an inclusive platform that respects the diverse cultural, religious, and academic traditions of the Arab world without taking religious positions, thereby enabling constructive dialogue across varied Islamic and Arab intellectual traditions (Al-Fanar Media, 2024)[25]
Moreover, its partnerships with regional organizations, such as the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), further connect it to institutions operating within the Islamic cultural sphere (Al-Fanar Media, 2024)[26].
Partnerships
Al-Fanar Media has established strategic partnerships to strengthen its impact and outreach, notably including:
1. UNIMED (Mediterranean Universities Union)
- Strategic partner to bridge academia and journalism in the Mediterranean and Arab regions (since 2021).
- Joint content production, trainings, workshops, “Voice of the Youth” journalism mentoring for students, capacity building. (Al-Fanar Media, 2022)[27]
2. Ford Foundation
- Provides grants for initiatives like media literacy programs among Arab university students.
- Supports media literacy workshops, webinars, and curricula development. (Al-Fanar Media, 2023)[28]
3. Open Society Foundations & Al Ghurair Foundation
- Collaboration on events promoting academic freedom in the Arab world.
- Panel discussions and advocacy on academic freedom. (Al-Fanar Media, 2024)[29]
4. Arab League Educational
- Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO)
- Partner in advancing educational and cultural projects in the Arab world. Joint cultural and educational initiatives. (Al-Fanar Media, 2024)[30]
5. Effat University, Mosul University, Heriot-Watt University Dubai, British University in Egypt, and Universities of Canada in Egypt
- Institutional partners within Al-Fanar Media’s Spotlight service, enhancing university visibility and outreach.
- Media coverage, capacity building for university communication. (Al-Fanar Media, 2024)
These collaborations enable Al-Fanar Media to increase the quality and impact of its reporting, develop young journalists, and promote meaningful discourse on higher education and research in the Arab and Mediterranean contexts (Al-Fanar Media, 2024[31]; UNIMED, 2023[32]; Al-Fanar Media, 2022[33]).
There is no direct or official critique from Iran’s perspective documented in the available search results specifically addressing Al-Fanar Media's work or suggesting hidden objectives attributed to the outlet by Iranian sources. However, one article on Al-Fanar Media itself notes a general suspicion among some quarters about Iran’s educational outreach in the Arab world, describing Iranian universities as “ambitious but secretive” and creating suspicion regarding their motives (Al-Fanar Media, 2017)[34]. This suggests that within the broader regional context, there may be cautious views toward institutions perceived as expanding Iran’s influence through education.
Regarding critique of Al-Fanar Media’s editorial independence or objectivity, a New York Times piece cited by Al-Fanar’s founder emphasized that the outlet aims to be “a thoughtful critic, not a cheerleader” for Arab higher education, signaling a commitment to balanced reporting rather than advocacy or propaganda (The New York Times, 2013)[35]. There is no indication that Al-Fanar Media promotes any hidden agenda aligned with external state interests, including Iran.
Iran’s regional strategy, as analyzed in independent dossiers (IISS, 2023), often involves cultural and educational outreach, which is sometimes viewed with suspicion by rival actors, but no explicit relationship or conflict with Al-Fanar Media is mentioned.
