Shafiq Mughni is a university professor, researcher of Islamic civilization history, and one of the prominent intellectual figures of Indonesia. He was a full-time professor at the Faculty of Letters of Sunan Ampel State Islamic University in Surabaya and has conducted extensive scholarly activity in the field of Islamic history and culture, particularly the history of the Middle East. He is also among the well-known figures of the Muhammadiyah organization in Indonesia and is considered an activist in interfaith and intercultural dialogue.


Biography

Shafiq Mughni was born on 15 June 1954 CE, in the city of Lamongan located in East Java, Indonesia. He completed his elementary education in his birthplace and finished his secondary education in the city of Bangil. He then entered the State Islamic Institute of Surabaya and began his university studies there.

Education

After completing his bachelor's degree at the State Islamic Institute of Surabaya, Shafiq Mughni traveled to the United States for further studies and studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He successfully obtained master's and doctoral degrees in Islamic Studies and Islamic Civilization History.


Positions

Professor Shafiq Mughni has held numerous scientific and executive responsibilities, including the following:

  • Dean of the Faculty of Letters at the State Islamic Institute of Surabaya;
  • President of Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo City (2001–2006 CE);
  • Regional Head of the Muhammadiyah Organization in East Java (2005–2010 CE);
  • Head of Interfaith and Intercultural Relations at the Central Council of the Muhammadiyah Organization (2015–2020 CE);
  • Special Envoy of the President of Indonesia for Dialogue and Cooperation among Religions and Civilizations (2018–2019 CE).


Scientific and Cultural Activities

Shafiq Mughni is considered one of the prominent researchers of Islamic civilization history, particularly the history of the Middle East. He has published numerous works in the field of Islamic studies, interfaith relations, civilizations, and intellectual developments of the Islamic world. During his activity, he has tried to introduce a moderate and centrist image of Indonesian Islam at the international level. From his viewpoint, Indonesian Islam is based on the principle of "Islam as Mercy to the Worlds" and can be a model for the coexistence of religions, cultures, and civilizations in the contemporary world.


Viewpoint

Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue

Shafiq Mughni believes that religion should not be a source of conflict and dispute, but rather should be considered a factor for connection among nations, cultures, and civilizations. During his tenure as the Special Envoy of the President of Indonesia for interfaith and intercultural dialogue affairs, he emphasized expanding understanding among followers of different religions.

Islam as Mercy to the Worlds

He is a proponent of the idea of "Islam as Mercy to the Worlds" and believes that the contemporary world needs an Islamic model based on moderation, tolerance, coexistence, and mutual respect. He has pursued the development of Indonesia's culture and civilization based on the principles of "Pancasila" and moderate Islamic values.
