Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, known as Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, is an Omani diplomat and politician who currently holds the position of Foreign Minister of the country. He is the representative of Oman at regional and international meetings, including the United Nations, and is known for his country's mediating role in international negotiations, including negotiations between Iran and the America.


Biography

Badr Albusaidi was born on 30 May 1960 in Muscat. He is the second son of Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, who served during the time of Sultan Said bin Taimur and Sultan Qaboos bin Said. His father was the private secretary of Sultan Said bin Taimur in the 1960s AD, and the family lived in the Salalah Palace grounds. After Sultan Qaboos came to power in 1970 AD, the family moved to Muscat. His father held the position of Minister of Diwan (Court) Affairs until 1986 AD, and then served as Personal Advisor to Sultan Qaboos until his death in 2002 AD. Badr Albusaidi married Noura bint Abdullah bin Mahawish Al Dhahiri in 1979 AD, who was formerly a citizen of Saudi Arabia and is now an Omani citizen. This marriage resulted in 4 children but ended in Divorce in 1993 AD.


Education

He completed his primary education in Saidiya schools between Muscat and Salalah, and in 1977 AD, he went to England for further studies. He was first prepared under private tutors in Wales and then in London, and was able to gain admission to the University of Oxford. In 1986 AD, he successfully obtained various degrees in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from the University of Oxford.


Political Activity

After returning to Muscat in 1988 AD, Badr joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and began his diplomatic career. His positions are as follows:

  • 1989 AD: First Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and establishment of the Political Analysis Office;
  • 1990 AD: Councilor;
  • 1996 AD: Ambassador;
  • 1997/1998 AD: Chief of Staff to the Minister;
  • 2000 AD: Deputy Minister;
  • 2007 AD: Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • 18 August 2020: Foreign Minister.

One of his important diplomatic achievements was leading the initial negotiations with the United States regarding labor law issues from 1993 AD, which led to Oman's membership in the World Trade Organization in 2000 AD, and the Oman-United States Free Trade Agreement in 2006 AD.

Role in Iran-US Talks

Given Oman's policy of neutrality and good neighborliness, Badr Albusaidi has played a key role in creating communication channels and mediation between Iran and the US. He was present in the second round of recent negotiations between Iran and the US held at the Omani Embassy in Rome, and met and spoke with Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran's senior negotiator. As the host of these negotiations, Oman seeks to help find peaceful solutions to resolve disputes by maintaining dialogue channels.

Political Approach

Badr Albusaidi believes that Omani diplomacy relies on fundamental principles stemming from the country's historical experience. He emphasizes that Muscat always strives to resolve conflicts relying on peaceful methods and prefers the policy of good neighborliness and keeping dialogue channels open. He considers discourse, understanding, and creating reciprocal relations the strongest foundation for peace, security, and stability. Albusaidi also emphasizes the importance of positive interaction, transparency, and equality in international relations and supports regional efforts to maintain peace and security.
