Biography

Abu al-Qasim Khwansari Riyazi, son of Mahmud Khwansari, was born in 1309 AH in Khansar. He studied advanced jurisprudence and principles in Najaf under his uncle Abu Turab Khwansari and Zia al-Din Iraqi, and received permission for Ijtihad and narration from Abu Turab Khwansari, Sayyid Hasan Sadr, and Sayyid Abu al-Hasan Isfahani. In addition to expertise in religious sciences, he had great mastery over arithmetic, geometry, and algebra, and wrote numerous works in these fields. Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba'i was among his special students. Abu al-Qasim Riyazi went to northern Pakistan for propagation at the request of Sayyid Abu al-Hasan Isfahani and settled there. He died in 1380 AH in the city of Gilgit and was buried there. A shrine was built over his grave [1].

Students

He was the foremost teacher of mathematics in the Najaf Seminary. Sayyid Abu al-Qasim Khoei and Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba'i and his brother, Sayyid Muhammad Hasan Ilahi Tabataba'i, studied mathematics under him. It is said that he provided simple solutions for complex mathematical problems, while he had learned mathematics without a teacher, which indicates his high genius [2].

Missionary Activities

Ayatollah Sayyid Abu al-Qasim Khwansari, known as Mujtahid, was from the city of Khansar, Iran. He came to the northern regions by the order of the jurist of the time, His Honor Sayyid Abu al-Hasan Isfahani, upon the invitation of the ruler of Nagar Presidency, Mir Sikandar Khan. He was proficient in modern sciences and was considered one of the famous scholars in India; he was a scholar immersed in God. He acquainted the Shias in this region with the knowledge of the Quran and Ahl al-Bayt (AS) and strove to spread Islamic knowledge [3]. After the death of Mir Sikandar Khan, the ruler of Nagar, he lived in poverty and destitution, left the Nagar Presidency, and settled in the Gilgit region. However, no suitable service was performed for him by the scholars and people of this region. Sayyid Abu al-Qasim Khwansari had left his beloved homeland Iran for the sake of serving the religion of Islam. His shrine is located in the Majni neighborhood of Gilgit. His devotees gather at his grave for visitation and reciting Fatiha [4].
