Salem Najm Salem Sowilem Shokr was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
Biography
He was born in 1935 AD in the village of Al-Daymun, affiliated with the Faqous center in the Sharqia Governorate, and studied there. Later, in 1948 AD, he entered the Faculty of Medicine at King Fuad I University; despite the difficulties he faced, he managed to graduate. It was in 1954 AD that the regime of Gamal Abdel Nasser pursued him, and after enduring hardships, he managed to flee to Kuwait and Iraq, where he obtained Iraqi citizenship. While there, he obtained a master's degree, and then went to the city of London in England to obtain a doctorate, after which he returned to Saudi Arabia for work.
Acquaintance with the Brotherhood
He became acquainted with the Muslim Brotherhood during his student days, such that his activity among the Brotherhood forces, especially during the preparation for the Canal War in 1951 AD, became apparent, and he worked closely with Dr. Mahmoud Jamea. He fled following the crackdown in 1954 AD and was among the pursued Brotherhood students. For a time, he hid in an apartment belonging to Mahmoud Jamea, which the security forces were aware of, and later fled with Mahmoud Jamea. He then traveled to London, obtained his doctorate, and returned to Saudi Arabia for work. Recounting these memories, Mahmoud Jamea says: Dr. Salem Najm was one of the elites of the Brotherhood who strove for the unity of the Brotherhood abroad, and when Gamal Abdel Nasser died and Anwar Sadat took power and wanted to turn a new page with Islamists, he engaged in dialogue with the fugitive leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, including Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Dr. Ahmed al-Asal, and engineers Abdel Raouf Mashhour, Abdel Moneim Mashhour, and Dr. Salem Najm, to try to discover their intentions and assure them in preparation for their return.
Mahmoud Jamea's Statement in the Book: I Knew Sadat
Mahmoud Jamea in the book "I Knew Sadat"; says: He succeeded in bringing Anwar Sadat and the Brotherhood closer together and played a major role in the release of Brotherhood leaders such as: Saleh Abu Ruqayq and Abdel Qader Helmy, whom the late Gamal Abdel Nasser had imprisoned. He managed to meet in Mecca, in coordination with the Saudi Arabian leadership, with leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Ahmed al-Asal, and Salem Najm, and agreed with them to return to Egypt and have their Egyptian nationality restored. They returned and revived the organization in Egypt. Sadat took the initiative to release the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood who had been detained in prisons and ordered the restoration of Egyptian nationality to those from whom it had been withdrawn during the Nasser era, including Dr. Salem Najm, who had obtained Iraqi citizenship and was returned as a citizen. As a gesture from Sadat, he ordered the restoration of Egyptian nationality to all Brotherhood members whose nationality had been revoked, including Dr. Salem Najm, who was returned and appointed as a professor of internal medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Al-Azhar. There, he was active with Omar Telmesani and his brothers, and participated in the establishment of the Islamic Medical Association in 1977 AD, where Dr. Ahmed al-Malt was elected as its vice chairman.
Death
He was active among his brothers in the Doctors Syndicate until after the 2005 AD elections he went to Saudi Arabia and remained in Saudi Arabia until he finally passed away on Wednesday, 8 Dhu al-Qi'dah 1435 AH, corresponding to September 3, 2014 AD.
