Sabri al-Layla, who was born in 1927 CE in Mosul, Iraq. At that time, the call and propagation of the Muslim Brotherhood reached Iraq, following which Muhammad Abdulhamid Ahmad and Dr. Hussein Kamaluddin traveled there. A number of people, due to their familiarity with the Ikhwan, joined this movement and worked for it. Dr. Ibrahim Khalil Allaf—an experienced professor of contemporary history at the University of Mosul—says about him: "For over 45 years, I have supervised and discussed many master's and doctoral theses in contemporary history at more than one university, and in all these theses, the name Hajj Sabri al-Layla was repeated as one of the most prominent Islamic preachers and one of those who participated in Islamic political and religious activities."
Biography
Sabri Mahmoud al-Layla was born in 1927. His father, Hajj Mahmoud Muhammad Ahmad al-Layla, was a prominent merchant among the merchants of Mosul. He was pious, devoted to worship, and committed to attending mosques. He was not extreme in his religiosity; rather, he was moderate and balanced, which is almost visible in his behavior and manner of dealing with people.
In the Ranks of the Ikhwan
He was one of the textile merchants in Bab al-Saray (the heart of the hereditary commercial district of Mosul) and had a shop there. He was not distant from the concerns of the Mosul society and its political, economic, and social atmosphere. Therefore, he was active with Sheikh Muhammad Mahmoud al-Sawwaf, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood. He is considered one of the founders of the Society of Muslim Brothers and then one of the founders of the Muslim Brotherhood. He was one of the most active students of Sheikh Muhammad Mahmoud al-Sawwaf. His son, Mr. Mahmoud, tells me that Sheikh al-Sawwaf used to say: "When I send my group for membership recruitment, whoever recruited one or two people would bring them to me. But Sabri Mahmoud al-Layla, due to his fluent style and use of insight and good advice, would recruit ten people for me."
Arrest and Trial
When the movement of Colonel Abdulwahhab al-Shawwaf, commander of the Mosul military base, against the regime of leader Abdulkerim Qasim, Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in Mosul on 8 March 1959, Hajj Sabri al-Layla supported it, and Islamists in Mosul supported it. They formed a group with the nationalists called (Islamic - National Society) and against the Communists. When the movement failed and Abdulwahhab al-Shawwaf was killed, he was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted and he was released.
Islamic Party of Iraq
In 1960 CE, when the Islamic Party of Iraq was formed, he was considered one of its most prominent founders. He was active there alongside Professor Ibrahim Abdullah Shahab, known as (Ibrahim Effendi), along with a group of people from Mosul.
Death
His son says: "His father died in his arms on Thursday, 20 Esfand 1384 Solar Hijri (11 March 2006 CE). His last hour was upon returning from Asr prayer: The weather was cold, he said: 'My son, I will die this week. This was the first time he said he would die.' While repeating the testimony of faith, he raised his index finger and passed away."
