Omar Mir Seddique Mateen (16 November 1986 – 12 June 2016) was an Afghan-American Muslim United States citizen and the perpetrator of the Orlando nightclub shooting, resident of Port St. Lucie, Florida[1] located approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Orlando. Mateen was born in New York state to Afghan parents. It was reported that he held a degree from Indian River State College. He married a woman from Uzbekistan named Sitora Yusufiy in April 2009 and divorced her in July 2011[2].
Career
Omar Mateen, 29, had been working as a security officer for a large security services company named G4S in Florida since September 2007. This company is responsible for securing U.S. federal buildings. The G4S security services company later granted Omar Mateen a license to carry a weapon for his duties. A spokesperson for the company said that they believed Mateen was working at a retirement home in South Florida. David Sutherland, spokesperson for G4S, continued in his remarks: "He was an armed security officer." The company announced in a statement that Omar Mateen had been employed since 10 September 2007 CE. The statement indicated that Omar Mateen's background file was reviewed twice in 2007 and 2013. Sutherland attempted to ensure whether the weapons used in the Orlando armed attack were related to Mateen's job at that company. He said: "Many of these matters depend on the executive laws that are being released."
Police involvement
Omar's identity was revealed to the police as a "person of interest" once in 2013 and once in 2014. A senior executive source in conversation with The Daily Beast said that the FBI police interrogated Mateen once but subsequently closed the file, as they did not reach sufficient reasons to continue interrogations. It is said that Omar called 911 (police) during the hostage-taking to declare his loyalty to ISIS. It is also said that he mentioned the names of the Boston Marathon bombers.
Gay nightclub
Mir Seddique, Omar Mateen's father, says that the gay club was intentionally chosen. He said in an interview with NBC News that seeing two homosexuals kissing in Miami had deeply distressed him. He continued: "We apologize to everyone for this incident. We had no knowledge of any of his actions whatsoever. We are also shocked by this event like the rest of the American people." He added that this armed attack had no connection to religion. ISIS has claimed responsibility for this attack and there is suspicion of the suicidal perpetrator's connection to ISIS.
Personal life
Omar Mateen was a Muslim. He went to a mosque in Fort Pierce, Florida four times a week to perform prayer. According to witnesses, although he caused trouble with his mischief in the mosque since childhood; later he became a quiet individual. Sitora Yusufiy, Omar Mateen's ex-wife, claims that he had psychological problems and was not a stable individual. Sitora says in an interview with reporters in Boulder, Colorado that Omar suffered from bipolar disorder and also had a history of steroid use. According to Sitora, Omar isolated her from her family during their four months of married life and occasionally beat her. Sitora continued in her remarks that during that period, her family helped her after meeting with him and becoming aware of his condition. Ms. Yusufiy stated that her ex-husband was religious but she never saw any signs of extremism in him. During the trial regarding the charges against Omar Mateen's wife, it was revealed that Seddique Mateen, Omar's father, had been an informant and information source for the U.S. Federal Police for more than a decade (from January 2005 to June 2016)[3].
