Major General Khaled Nezzar was born on 27 December 1937 in the village of Sarayaneh, part of Batna. He is a prominent Algerian military figure. He was the fourth Chief of Staff of the Algerian Army and one of the supporters of the coup against the results of the Islamic Consultative Assembly elections that took place in December 1991, and during this period he was one of the key figures of the Algerian regime. Between 1990 and 1993 CE, the Blida Military Court sentenced him, who was the Minister of Defense, and his son Lotfi to 20 years in prison on charges of violating army authority and plotting against state authority.


Overview

He was born into a large family of fourteen people, and his father worked as a sergeant in the Francen Army. Khaled Nezzar followed in his father's footsteps, although the Algerian Revolution had begun at that time; as he joined the French military school Saint-Maixent in 1955, but at the end of 1958 he escaped from the French Army to join the first front. The National Liberation Army of Algeria, which was led by Chadli Bendjedid. At that time, due to late joining the revolution, suspicions were cast upon him. In any case, he stayed in Tunisia and trained revolutionaries until Algeria gained its independence in 1962.


Career

In 1982 CE, he became the commander of the Fifth Military Zone in Constantine, and then the commander of the Land Forces and Deputy Chief of Staff of the People's National Army on 16 June 1987 CE, and during the October 1988 CE events, he was tasked with restoring order. In those events, a number of people were killed, and then on 10 July 1990 CE, President Chadli Bendjedid appointed him as Minister of Defense, and he remained in this position until 27 July 1993 CE. He was able to lead the coup against the elections.

In 1993 CE, he was subjected to an unsuccessful assassination attempt, which caused him to gradually withdraw from political life, after Liamine Zéroual took power in 1994 CE, in July 2000 CE, he established an internet services company along with his three sons. Complaints in this regard were filed against him in Paris, the capital of France, in the year 1392 CE. Chadli Bendjedid accused him of spying for France, which he completely denied. Khaled Nezzar was also accused of using live ammunition in the 1988 CE protests, and he stated that the dispersal forces that were sent to disperse the protests did not have rubber bullets.
