He was known as the "Shadow Man" in the Islamic Resistance, and many considered him the mastermind of Hezbollah. The United States government had set a bounty for any information about him. Imad Mughniyeh was assassinated in Damascus in 2008 and achieved martyrdom. The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, in a message on the occasion of his martyrdom, introduced him as a person who was full of love and passion for jihad in the way of God.
Biography
Martyr Imad Mughniyeh, known as Hajj Radwan, was born on 7 December 1962 in the city of Tyre in southern Lebanon. His father was Fayez Mughniyeh and his brothers were Jihad and Fuad. Both of his brothers were martyred. Several children remain from Martyr Imad. Jihad, one of his children, was martyred on 17 January 2015 in an attack by Israeli helicopters on the vehicle carrying him in the Golan Heights of Syria.
The Mughniyeh family moved from Tyre to the southern suburbs of Beirut after a while, and in this region, he completed his elementary and high school education, and afterwards, in his youth, he entered the American University of Beirut (AUB).
Political and Social Activities
Imad Mughniyeh joined "Force 17", the military wing of the Palestine Liberation Movement, in the early 1980s. This force was formed to protect fighters such as Abu Ammar, Abu Jihad, and Abu Iyad.
He played a key role from that time in the operation of transferring weapons from the Palestine Liberation Movement to the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon (which consisted of Hezbollah and the Amal Movement). However, following the occupation of Lebanon in 1982 by Israel, Palestine Liberation Movement fighters were forced to leave Lebanon.
Initially, with the departure of Palestinian fighters and the Palestine Liberation Organization from Lebanon, he joined the fighters of the Amal Movement. However, with the transfer of Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah to Hezbollah, he also transferred to this newly established party, and after successfully executing several operations, he was selected as the commander of the guard for protecting high-ranking Hezbollah officials. Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah considered Imad Mughniyeh the thinker and inventor of military operations. Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah introduced Imad Mughniyeh as the head of the jihadist structure. According to claims by Israel, he was responsible for leading the operation of kidnapping two Israeli soldiers in the summer of 2006. An operation that led to the start of the war against Lebanon.
He was also one of the Hezbollah commanders in the 33-Day War. Very few images of Imad Mughniyeh have been published. The US Federal Police (FBI) claimed that he had undergone plastic surgery on his face twice so that he would not be identified.
The design of all Hezbollah military operations has been attributed to Imad Mughniyeh. He began his jihadist activity from the time of the party's creation and established the military wing.
According to claims by Israel, Mughniyeh was accused of carrying out certain operations, including the kidnapping of foreigners in Lebanon, the explosion of the US Marine headquarters in Beirut, the explosion of the French paratrooper headquarters in Beirut, the hijacking of the American "TWA" airplane, twice the explosion of the US Embassy headquarters in Beirut, the explosion of the Iraqi Embassy headquarters in Beirut, and the explosion of the Jewish center in Buenos Aires.
Method of Mughniyah's Martyrdom
On 12 February 2008 CE (23 Bahman 1386 SH), "Imad Fayez Mughniyah", Deputy Secretary-General of Hezbollah in the Jihad Committee of Hezbollah, arrived in the "Kafr Souseh" district in Damascus and entered an apartment where some Palestinian leaders, an official of one of the Hezbollah Jihad sections, and a number of members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran were present to discuss and exchange views on military training and coordination.
Before the meeting concluded, Mughniyah left the session and asked those present to continue the discussions and coordination. Minutes later, the sound of an explosion was heard. All those who participated in the meeting believed they had been targeted, but the shouting of people in the courtyard in front of the building and the presence of Syrian security agencies and forces at the site drew some of them out of the house to see what had happened, where they found Imad Mughniyah who had been struck by 8 iron balls.
One of the iron balls had struck his eye and exited from the back of his head. He had lost his life immediately. His friends took his body into the car and headed directly to Lebanon. The Hezbollah military official who was present at the meeting with Mughniyah contacted Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary-General of Hezbollah Lebanon, to inform him of Mughniyah's martyrdom and to transfer his body to the hospital.
The Israeli regime had prepared his work schedules and movement maps more than 6 months before the assassination and was aware of them, such that the intelligence and espionage apparatus was tracking him secretly and silently.
Thus, Mughniyah was martyred on 12 February due to a bomb explosion. The aforementioned sources emphasize that 3 teams were present at the assassination site: the surveillance and tracking team, the operation execution team, and the team for removing and extracting the agents from the site. All these teams were located near the assassination site and in an apartment opposite the center affiliated with the IRGC.
Also, at the assassination site, an unmanned aerial vehicle model "Haroun" was observed, which is a type of radar-evading aircraft and Syrian radars were unable to detect and identify it. The duty of this aircraft was to cover the teams executing the Kafr Souseh terrorist operation.
Besides that, the 8200 listening device manufactured by the Israeli regime was installed to monitor and record all landline and mobile calls and necessary information from all security and non-security forces at the incident site to provide necessary support to the teams and increase the operation's success.
According to these sources, the Israeli regime conducted a provocative drill off the coasts of Lebanon on the night of the assassination, especially opposite the "Raouche Rock" area, with boats equipped with missile launchers. Also, an Israeli submarine of the "Dolphin" type was observed and tracked in the waters of the "Khaldeh" area, to occupy Hezbollah and divert its attention from what was prepared for it in Syria.
