Ibrahim al-Zayat, the youth leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Germany, was born in Marburg, Germany (a city in the central district of Marburg-Biedenkopf in the northern part of the state of Hesse, Germany). He studied industrial engineering, law, and economics in the cities of Marburg and Cologne. From 2002 to 2010, he served as the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Germany. Al-Zayat also collaborated with Yusuf al-Qaradawi in establishing the European Council for Fatwa and Research.


Overview

Ibrahim al-Zayat, the youth leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, was born in Marburg, Germany. Ibrahim al-Zayat is considered one of the most important leaders in the front line of the Muslim Brotherhood organization. He has been introduced in European media as the Finance Minister of the Muslim Brotherhood. He studied industrial engineering, law, and economics in the cities of Marburg and Cologne, and in 1992, he received his master's degree in economics with a thesis titled "Islamic Economic Systems." He subsequently worked as a professor of economics and Islamic law at several German universities. Al-Zayat, who currently resides in his hometown of Marburg, is married to Sabiha Erbakan, a German-Turkish physician who is the niece of Necmettin Erbakan and serves as the leader of the Association of Muslim Women in Germany (a feminist front).


Muslim Brotherhood

Al-Zayat served as the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Germany from 2002 to 2010. Although al-Zayat may not admit to his connection with the Muslim Brotherhood, in an article published by the Muslim Brotherhood in Germany in 1996 in the first issue of the magazine "Islamic Youth," he described the Muslim Brotherhood as "the most important Islamic reformist movement of the twentieth century." Furthermore, on February 23, 2007, Mohammed Mahdi Akef, the former Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, described al-Zayat as the "head of the Brotherhood in Germany" during a television interview on the "ARD" channel.


Activities

Al-Zayat served as the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Germany from 2002 to 2010 and is a founding member or a key member in most of the organizational bodies of the Muslim Brotherhood in Europe, including the following:

  1. Member of the Executive Office of the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe;
  2. Member of the European Islamic Network;
  3. Member of the Board of Trustees of the International Islamic Relief Organization;
  4. Member of the Board of Trustees of the European Institute of Human Sciences;
  5. Founding member and first president of the European Islamic Assembly for Youth and Students;
  6. One of the founding members of the European Association for the Construction and Support of Mosques, which is responsible for managing nearly 300 mosques in Germany, in addition to overseeing mosque construction in other European countries. Al-Zayat also collaborated with Yusuf al-Qaradawi in establishing the European Council for Fatwa and Research.


Economic Activities

Al-Zayat owns numerous international companies under the umbrella of the Al-Zayat Trading Company, with the majority of his business activities focused on real estate. He also manages the endowments of the Islamic Community Movement "Milli Görüş." In April 2008, he was sentenced in absentia by an Egyptian court to 10 years in prison on charges of money laundering for the benefit of the banned group (the Muslim Brotherhood).
