Hanifa Safi (died 13 July 2012) was the Regional Head of the Ministry of Women's Affairs in Laghman Province, Afghanistan from 2008 until her assassination. She served on cases related to violence against women and supported women to overcome violence.

Assassination

On 13 July, Hanifa Safi was killed by a bomb attached to her car while driving on the route to Mehtarlam, the capital of Laghman (about 150 km northeast of Kabul). In this incident, her husband and daughter were severely injured and more than 11 other civilians were killed[1][2]. This assassination was condemned internationally, including by the United Nations[3]. In 2006, in a similar case, the regional head of women's affairs in Kandahar Province was assassinated by the Taliban[4]. Hanifa Safi was the second head of women's affairs to be killed in that decade. Her successor, Najia Sediqi, was also assassinated five months after starting her work on 10 December 2012[5].
