George W. Bush (English: George W. Bush) or George Walker Bush, who is better known as George W. Bush Jr., is an American politician and the 43rd president of the United States. He is the eldest son of George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st president of the United States. Bush served as the 46th governor of the state of Texas from 1995 to 2000, and then served as the President of the United States from 2001 to 2009.
Biography
George Walker Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in Connecticut, USA. He was the first child among five children of George Herbert Walker Bush and Barbara Bush. His only sister Dorothy died at the age of three in 1953 due to leukemia. Some believe that his sister's death had a significant negative impact on George's spirit and was the cause of many of his abnormal behaviors in adulthood. After finishing his studies at Phillips Academy in Massachusetts, like his father, he pursued his university studies at Yale University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in History. He was an average student at the university.
In May 1968, with the escalation of the Vietnam War, he took the United States Air National Guard exams and was accepted; although considering the point that in these exams he was only able to score 25 percent of the written pilot aptitude test, which was the lowest score for acceptance. In 1970, George Bush applied to the University of Texas School of Law but was rejected. In 1973, he was discharged from military service earlier than usual to study at Harvard Business School and graduated with a master's degree in 1977. During this period of his life, George Bush turned to drinking alcohol and was even arrested once at the age of 30 for driving under the influence and sentenced to pay a $150 fine. His driver's license was also suspended for two years. In 1977, he met Laura Welch, who was a school teacher at the time, and after a while they married. George Bush left his family's church and joined his wife's church.
Career
Business activities
After finishing his studies in college, Bush started working in their family oil company. After that, for a while he was a co-owner of the baseball team "Texas Rangers" and then participated in the Texas gubernatorial election and from 1995 to 2000, governed as the governor of this state.
Presidency
He was nominated as a candidate by the Republican Party in the US presidential election and won in a close and tight competition with "Al Gore", the candidate of the Democratic Party. George Walker Bush was sworn in as President of the United States on January 20, 2001. As president, in 2001, he approved a law based on which the tax revenue in the US decreased by $1.35 trillion.
War on Terror and Afghanistan
In October 2001, after the September 11 incident, Bush raised the issue of the war on terrorism in the world. With this excuse, Bush ordered the attack on Afghanistan. His excuse for this attack was to overcome the Taliban forces, destroy al-Qaeda, and arrest Osama bin Laden.
Iraq War
In March 2003, Bush started another war and ordered a military attack on Iraq. The excuse for the war was Iraq's defiance of UN Security Council Resolution 1441 and the defense of America. In the middle of the war with Iraq, Bush, who called himself the "War President", was elected as president for the second time in the 2004 presidential election.
Criticism
Bush, who began his presidency with 50 percent public support, after the September 11 incident managed to achieve 90 percent popularity among the American people; but this popularity did not last long. The main reason for this decline in popularity was Bush's foreign policy. He faced much criticism for the way he managed the Iraq War. The way of dealing with Hurricane Katrina and the little activity that was done to rebuild the storm-stricken areas was another reason for this incident. Controlling people's conversations without the need for a warrant in the name of the war on terror, the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo prison scandal were other reasons for this decline in popularity. Until October 2007, the US spent more than $455 billion in the Iraq War. Also, more than 3,830 American military personnel and more than 73,000 Iraqi civilians were killed in this war until this date. The Gallup polling institute announced Bush's popularity as 24 percent after the 2004 election, which was the lowest level of presidential popularity in the US in the 35 years prior to that time. Bush's eight-year presidency in the US, which turned him into the most unpopular president in American history, ended on January 20, 2009, and Barack Obama took his place.
