George H. W. Bush (English: George H. W. Bush) with the full name George Herbert Walker Bush, who is better known as George Bush Sr., was an American politician and the 41st President of the United States. He led the White House from 1989 to 1993 AD. Before the presidency, Bush had served in positions such as Congressman, Director of the CIA, US Ambassador to the United Nations, and Vice President during the Ronald Reagan administration.

Biography

George H. W. Bush was born on 12 June 1924 in Milton, Massachusetts. He joined the US Army during World War II and served as a fighter pilot in the Pacific Ocean. After the war, he graduated from Yale University and then moved to Texas to work in the oil and gas sector.

Activities

Political Activities

Bush's entry into politics began with representing the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives. In 1971 AD, Richard Nixon appointed him as the US Ambassador to the United Nations. He then served between 1974 and 1976 AD as the Chief of the US Liaison Office in China (before the establishment of a formal embassy) and afterwards from 1976 to 1977 AD, was the Director of the CIA. In 1980 AD, Ronald Reagan selected him as his vice-presidential candidate and they were in executive positions for two consecutive terms (1981-1989 AD). Bush finally won in the 1988 election and became the 41st President of the United States.

Presidency

Bush's presidency was accompanied by major international developments including the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. During this period, he had close relations with Mikhail Gorbachev and it was announced that the US and Russia had entered a strategic partnership era.

Gulf War

One of the most important events of his presidency was the Persian Gulf War. Following the invasion of Kuwait by the Iraqi army on 2 August 1990, Bush formed an international coalition consisting of 34 countries and on 17 January 1991 began the operation to liberate Kuwait. Bush stated the main motivation for this operation was to prevent Saddam Hussein from controlling a large portion of the world's oil resources.

Invasion of Panama

In December 1989, Bush ordered the invasion of Panama to remove Manuel Noriega, the dictator of that country. This operation, which had the legitimate objective "JUST CAUSE", lasted four days and faced international reactions and condemnation by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Relations with Iraq

Bill Clinton, Bush's electoral rival in the 1992 election, criticized Bush's policies towards Saddam Hussein in the debates. He pointed out that the US in the final years of the Iran-Iraq War and afterwards, despite awareness of Saddam's authoritarian nature and his use of chemical weapons, due to his enmity with Iran, had pursued a policy of appeasement and improvement of secret relations. Clinton called this approach, which was based on the principle of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", mistaken.

Death

After losing the 1992 election to Bill Clinton, Bush retired from active politics. His wife, Barbara Bush, died on 17 April 2018 (Farvardin 1397). George Bush Sr. died only a few months after his wife, on 30 November 2018 (10 Azar 1397) at the age of 94 in Houston, Texas. He is the father of George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, and Jeb Bush, the former Governor of Florida.
