Arrest

Professor Dr. Ali Al-Hammadi was arrested for the first time for supporting Egyptian protesters in Tahrir Square after Friday prayer on 4 February 2011, in the city of "Khor Fakkan" in the Emirate of Sharjah, and was transferred to Al-Sadr Prison in Abu Dhabi, then released. His crime was that he sought reforms in his homeland, and the state punished him by revoking his citizenship. UAE authorities revoked the citizenship of Dr. Al-Hammadi and six of his colleagues within the framework of the case known as "UAE 94" without any reason, and he himself stated that he does not know the main reason for the revocation of citizenship and there was no trial, and he considers this matter contrary to the constitution. Because he criticized the revocation of citizenship from himself and his colleagues, he faced illegal arrest by UAE authorities. After a period of torture and abuse, Dr. Al-Hammadi (in addition to the revocation of citizenship from him and his family) was sentenced to 10 years in prison and transferred to the prison known as "Al-Razeen", however without the right to appeal or object.

Dr. Al-Hammadi and all signatories of this petition consider this action an insult to the government and ministries and institutions and its citizens and the country's credibility at the domestic, regional, and international levels. Al-Hammadi said in a statement: The Security Administration demanded from us all official and identity documents, passport, citizenship, ID card, driver's license, and even health card, so that nothing remained to show human identity!. Expressing regret over this accusation, he said: This is a very dangerous precedent that a list of names of those whose citizenship was revoked comes. For a long time, we have been banned from speaking and teaching, but that it reaches revocation of citizenship, this is a very dangerous matter that has no parallel in any other country in the world. He proceeded to explain about the seven other detained citizens: Who are these individuals? And what have they done for the homeland? If we read their biographies, we will realize that they were important potentials of the society and were never a danger to the homeland and have worked very much for this country, and their achievements are countless, so read their biographies!.

Reactions

Previously, the Working Group of the United Nations on arbitrary detentions issued a statement stating that the arrest of "sixty-one" defendants in the case known as "UAE 94" is of the type of arbitrary detention and the UAE government was asked to release them immediately and pay appropriate compensation to them. Also, the European Parliament on 26 October 2012, announced its concern about the deterioration of the human rights situation in the United Arab Emirates and confirmed that arbitrary arrests and lack of fair trial guarantees have been, and threats and abuses have even targeted the lawyers of the detainees. The European Parliament has asked UAE authorities to proceed to the freedom of detainees of conscience and human rights defenders unconditionally and to pay attention to respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms including freedom of speech, assembly, demonstrations, women's rights, gender equality, and the right to a fair trial.
