Ahmed Nahhas maintained close ties with the Muslim Brotherhood and ultimately died in Tora Prison in 2021 AD.
Biography
He was born on February 12, 1959, in the Sharqia Governorate of Egypt. His father was keen on his education and pursuit of knowledge until he graduated in 1983 from the Faculty of Engineering, Civil Engineering Department, at Alexandria University. During that period, he witnessed the peak of Islamic movements' activities within universities; consequently, like many other students, he became acquainted with the Muslim Brotherhood. Engineer Ahmed settled in the city of Alexandria and continued his life by opening an engineering consultancy office, specializing in consultancy for the Owners' Union. He also worked as a consulting engineer and project manager for Virginia Tourism and was among the first to participate in the reconstruction of the Western Desert through the Green Oasis project.
Collaboration with the Muslim Brotherhood
He became acquainted with the Muslim Brotherhood while studying at Alexandria University, where he played a significant role and eventually became one of its leaders in Alexandria. He even ran for membership in the People's Assembly in the 2000 elections for the Ramal district in Alexandria but was rejected. He attempted again in 2005 to run for the People's Assembly but withdrew in favor of Sobhi Saleh, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate. He was also a member of the Muslim Brotherhood's Shura Council.
Activities
Ahmed Al-Nahhas was one of the active figures within the Brotherhood who never tired of serving the people, defending the homeland and religion, and calling others to it; therefore, it was natural for him to participate in numerous activities, including:
- A prominent member of the "Engineers Against the Guard" group.
- Treasurer of the Engineers Syndicate in Alexandria.
- Secretary of the Coordination Committee for Professional Syndicates in Alexandria.
- Head of the Housing and Projects Committee of the Syndicate.
- Former President of the Student Union of the Faculty of Technical Studies at Alexandria University.
- Member of the Egyptian Consultants Association.
- Member of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University.
- Member of the Materials Science Association in Alexandria.
- Director of the "Hiwar" Development and Media Center.
- Commissioner of the Dar Al-Salam Buildings Federation.
- Member of several charitable institutions.
- Member of the Association for Combating Unemployment.
Trial and Arrest
His activities led to his inclusion on the State Security list. His first arrest occurred during the events of September 1981, when Sadat ordered the detention of a number of opponents to the Camp David Accords, most of whom were from the countryside. Ahmed Al-Nahhas, during his student years, was among them and had studied for one year at the Faculty of Technical Studies. During the People's Assembly elections in 1987, he was arrested for campaigning for Brotherhood candidates and remained in prison for one month. On January 17, 2007, he was arrested during a military parade at Al-Azhar University, where his company was closed and his office activities suspended. Consequently, the family's source of income ceased; they were not content with this situation, as authorities also seized all his money, family funds, and assets. Security forces raided and thoroughly searched his home, inspected his office, and confiscated money and all computers.
Death
Engineer Ahmed Al-Nahhas, at the age of 63, had been under pursuit for eight years following the coup. He was arrested on July 12, 2021, and held in Tora Prison until he contracted the Coronavirus. This disease spread due to the neglect of prisoners in Al-Sisi's prisons, and he died on Thursday, September 23, 2021, in Tora Prison.
