Ahmad al-Kufahi, born in 1939 CE in the city of Irbid, Jordan, is a university professor and a member of the Jordanian Parliament since the by-elections of 1984 CE. He achieved the highest recorded vote count in Jordan's 1989 elections, securing 32,000 votes. He was a member of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.
Education
He holds a PhD in Islamic Law from Al-Azhar University, specializing in Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence. He studied at Hawara College and Yarmouk University, from which he was expelled for political reasons.
Activities
Political and Social Activities
He engaged in political work starting from the by-elections of 1984 CE. In the 1989 Jordanian elections, he secured 32,000 votes, setting the highest recorded tally. He was subsequently elected for a third term in 1993 under the single-vote law. Throughout his career, he was the candidate of the Islamic Bloc in the Irbid constituency. He is regarded as one of the most prominent reformist and social figures in the city of Irbid. He is the father of Nabil al-Kufahi, who was elected mayor of Irbid in 1999 CE. Ahmad al-Kufahi himself ran twice in the parliamentary and municipal elections for the city of Irbid in 2007.
Legal and Doctrinal Activities
Dr. al-Kufahi is an eloquent orator and a skilled public speaker. He remains active in legal practice and social affairs to this day. He participated twice in the parliamentary and municipal elections for the city of Irbid, in 1999 and 2007, but state-sponsored fraud prevented his victory. He is a prominent member of the Islamic Action Front party in Jordan and serves as one of the key thinkers and strategic planners within the Islamic movement in Jordan. He has fourteen children, six of whom hold doctoral degrees.
Activities in Traditional Medicine
He is a professor of medicines and medicinal plants at the College of Pharmacy, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Jordan. He was selected as a member of the World Health Organization's advisory board and as an international expert in the field of traditional medicine. He was awarded the distinguished researcher grant in medicines and medicinal plants in the United States, known as the "Kilmer" award, granted by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, for a period of four years. He chairs the Medicinal Plants Committee in the Arab World and serves on the editorial boards of several domestic and international scientific journals. He has published over 60 research papers in international scientific journals.
