Abu Anas al-Libi[1], born Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai (30 March 1964, Tripoli[2] – 2 January 2015, New York City), was a computer programmer who became an operational commander of al-Qaeda. He operated alongside al-Qaeda leaders in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Libya.[3][4]
Background
He was one of the perpetrators of the 1998 attacks on the United States embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.
Fate
On 5 October 2013, he was captured in a covert operation in Tripoli by the United States Army, with assistance from the FBI and CIA.[5] [6]
In September 2012, CNN reported that Abu Anas al-Libi had returned to Libya after nearly a decade of imprisonment in Iran.[7]
He died on 2 January 2015, a few days before his scheduled trial in New York City, due to liver cancer in a hospital.
