Abdullah was the son of Muslim ibn Aqil and his mother was Ruqayyah, the daughter of Ali (peace be upon him). He was among the companions of Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon him)[1][2][3][4] who was martyred in Karbala at the age of fourteen[5].
First Martyr of Banu Hashim
It is reported that after the martyrdom of Imam Husayn's companions, the Ahl al-Bayt bid farewell to one another, and the first person who went to the battlefield and was martyred was him[6][7][8][9]. (Ibn A'tham[10] and Khwarizmi[11] and Ibn Shahrashub have mentioned Abdullah ibn Muslim as the first martyr).
However, some consider Ali al-Akbar as the first martyr of Banu Hashim and mention Abdullah's martyrdom after him; thus, the second martyr from the Al Abi Talib is Abdullah ibn Muslim[12][13][14].
Abdullah in the Battlefield
According to another narration, Abdullah came to Imam Husayn and asked for permission to enter the battlefield. His Holiness said: Not much time has passed since the martyrdom of Muslim, and his tragedy has not been forgotten from memories. I give you permission to take your mother's hand and leave this difficult scene. Abdullah said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! I am not someone who would prefer the life of this lowly world over eternal life. My request is that you accept this unworthy life of mine as a sacrifice for you!. His Holiness, who was the owner of grace and generosity, accepted his request and Abdullah headed to the battlefield[15][16].
Abdullah's Rajaz in the Battlefield
Abdullah recited this rajaz:
Today I meet my father Muslim and the young men who passed away upon the religion of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny). They were not people known for lying, but rather the noble and honorable ones from the sayyids of the great Banu Hashim clan. (Ibn A'tham has mentioned the rajaz with slight differences[17]).
Martyrdom of Abdullah
He killed 98 people in three stages and then was martyred by the hand of Amr ibn Subayh Saydawi and Asad ibn Malik[18][19]. Regarding the manner of his martyrdom, it is reported that Amr ibn Subayh threw an arrow at him; he placed his hand on his forehead; the arrow came and stitched the hand and forehead together so that he could not separate them. Another arrow struck his heart and split his heart[20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. Another person struck his heart with a spear and martyred him[27][28]. (In some reports, the killing of Abdullah ibn Muslim, in the manner described, is attributed to a person named Zayd ibn Rqqad al-Junabi[29][30]).
Fate of Abdullah's Killer
Ibn Athir under the events of the year 66 AH and the Uprising of Mukhtar and the killing of the killers of Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon him) writes: Mukhtar sent a group to arrest Zayd ibn Warqa al-Junabi -al-Jabani, al-Juhani-. He was the one who said: "I shot a young man with an arrow who placed his hand on his forehead so the arrow would not hit it; I stitched his hand to his forehead so he could not separate his hand from his forehead. That young man was Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Aqil; and when I shot the arrow at him, he said: O God, these people found us few and humiliated us, kill them just as they killed us! I shot another arrow at him and killed him. When I came to him, he had passed away. I took the arrow that I had shot at his stomach, I moved the one that was on his forehead to come out, but its head remained in the forehead and I took out the shaft of the arrow". When Mukhtar's companions came to arrest him, he came out with a sword. Ibn Kamil (the commander of that group) said: Do not hit him with sword and spear, but hit him with arrow and stone; and thus they weakened and arrested him and then burned him alive in fire[31][32].
