Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi is one of the leaders of the Taliban and belongs to the Uzbeks ethnic group. He was a member of the Taliban negotiation team with the United States.
Life and Education
He was born in 1348 SH (1969 CE) in Faryab Province, northern Afghanistan. He studied religious sciences in Pakistan. He also taught Islamic culture at Kabul University for three years. With the formation of the Taliban, he joined the group.
Positions and Views on Rapprochement
In an interview with "Studio al-Imarah", explaining the criterion of "Hanafi school" in inter-Afghan negotiations, he noted: "The fact that in the inter-Afghan negotiations discussion it is stated that if we face differences in the interpretation of texts, the issue should be resolved based on Hanafi jurisprudence, this does not mean that we hold discrimination and bias against our Shia brothers."
"Praise be to God, in Afghanistan between Shia and Sunni there is no kind of difference and discrimination, and all for centuries and years have lived together like brothers."
Mawlawi Abdul Salam stated: "We will not allow anyone to fuel religious differences in Afghanistan and create division between Shia and Sunni."
"During the rule of the Islamic Emirate (Taliban), the personal status of our Shia brothers was fully protected, and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has no problem in this regard in the future either."
He elsewhere noted that this group will not only not create problems for representatives and charitable institutions and their domestic and foreign staff, but will provide a secure environment for them. In cities under the group's control, the Taliban has so far secured the security of diplomatic centers.
