Abdul Rasul Sayyaf is a prominent figure among the Afghan mujahideen against the former Soviet Union. He began his political activities in the Muslim Youth Movement. In 1974 (CE), due to harsh speeches against the government and encouraging people to violence, he was imprisoned for five years along with other members of the Afghan Muslim Brotherhood.


Biography

He was born in 1944 (CE) in Paghman District, Kabul Province, and completed his primary education in 1960 (CE) at the Imam Abu Hanifa School in Kabul.


Education

Sayyaf graduated from the Sharia Faculty of Kabul University in 1967 (CE) and two years later began working as a professor at the same university. In 1971 (CE), he went to Al-Azhar University in Egypt for further studies and obtained a master's degree in Hadith. He speaks Persian, Arabic, and Pashto fluently.


Political Activities

After returning to Afghanistan, he continued teaching and simultaneously began his political activities in the Muslim Youth Movement. In 1974 (CE), due to harsh speeches against the government and encouraging people to violence, he was imprisoned for five years along with other members of the Afghan Muslim Brotherhood. After his release in 1979 (CE), he went to Pakistan and worked in the Jamiat-e Islami party under the leadership of Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani. In 1980 (CE), he founded the Islamic Unity Party of Afghanistan.


Role in Civil Wars

After the fall of Dr. Najibullah's government, Sayyaf returned to Kabul and was known as one of the supporters of the Burhanuddin Rabbani government. He played a role in the civil wars between 1992 and 1995 (CE) and is known for heavy fighting with the Islamic Unity Party led by Abdul Ali Mazari in western Kabul. These wars led to the killing of thousands of people, and some individuals were accused of war crimes and violations of human rights in this regard[citation needed].


Opposition to the Taliban

After the Taliban took control of Kabul, Sayyaf went to the north of the country and served as deputy to Burhanuddin Rabbani and a member of the leadership council of the Northern Alliance. After the fall of the Taliban, he played a role in forming the new government and participated in emergency Loya Jirgas and the Constitution.


Current Activities

Sayyaf was one of the staunch supporters of the Hamid Karzai government and has been a representative of the people of Kabul in the parliament for two terms of the Wolesi Jirga elections. He supported Hamid Karzai in the past two presidential elections and later became a presidential candidate himself. During the Jihad against the Soviet Union, Sayyaf founded the Dawat al-Jihad University in Peshawar, where Arab, Afghan, and Pakistani professors taught. He currently owns this private university and a television network named Dawat in Kabul, and has renamed his Islamic Unity Party to Islamic Dawah Party.
