Mullah Abdul Qayum Zakir is one of the leaders of the Taliban.
Biography
Mullah Abdul Qayum Zakir is also known as "Abdul Ghulam Rasul", "Abdullah Ghulam Rasul", and "Abdul Zakir"; he is a citizen of Afghanistan. He was one of the founders of the Taliban and one of the individuals close to "Mullah Mohammed Omar", the leader of this group, and was considered one of the most powerful figures in this group and served as the Minister of Defence. He had high influence among Taliban circles and southern tribes, and for this reason, the administration of all security affairs of the country was entrusted to him[1].
Mullah Abdul Qayum Zakir possessed expertise and experience and became the Taliban responsible for Kabul province and managed most of the capital's affairs. Previously, he held multiple positions in the Taliban, and for this reason, he is one of the most important figures and personalities of this group today.
Imprisonment
Mullah Qayum Zakir was previously detained in Guantanamo Bay prison with prisoner number 8. After the Guantanamo detention facility, he was transferred to "Pul-e-Charkhi" prison, which was under the control of American forces, and was released after some time. After being released, Zakir joined the ranks of the Taliban and took responsibility for some military operations in Helmand province. Shortly after, he became the commander of all Taliban military forces. Regarding the selection of leadership after the killing of Mullah Mohammed Omar, the first leader of the Taliban, he had announced: He has no objection to the leadership of Mullah Akhtar Mansour over the Taliban[2].
