Abdul Haq Wasiq is one of the senior leaders of the Taliban.

Biography

Abdul Haq Wasiq was born in 1971 and is from the Khogyani tribe of Ghazni province, Afghanistan. He was educated at the Zia-ul-Madaris religious school in Quetta, Pakistan. After the capture of Kabul by the Taliban group in 1996, he established working relations with Qari Ahmadullah and subsequently became his deputy. His signature was valid across all areas under Taliban control.

He had direct contact with Mullah Mohammed Omar, the leader of the Taliban, and the Islamic Party of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. He has been described as someone who was at the center of Taliban efforts to unite radical Islamic groups and coordinate them with the Taliban.

According to documents published on the WikiLeaks website, citing Americans, he used his office to support the Al-Qaeda group. For this reason, he was pursued by the United States and was arrested in November 2001 in Muqur district, Ghazni.

The Americans transferred him to Guantanamo Bay prison to obtain information that would help in locating Mullah Omar, Taliban intelligence offices, and identifying members of the Al-Qaeda group. He entered Guantanamo Bay detention camp in January 2002 and remained there until 31 May 2014. He was released from Guantanamo Bay prison and transferred to Qatar through the mediation of the Qatari government during an exchange with one of the American soldiers.

Along with his release and 4 other senior Taliban commanders, Mullah Mohammed Omar, the first leader of the Taliban, in a message described the release of 5 senior Taliban leaders in exchange for the release of an American soldier named "Bowe Bergdahl", who had been in Taliban captivity for 4 years and 11 months, as a great victory and said: I sincerely congratulate the great victory of the release of 5 Taliban leaders from Guantanamo Bay prison to the Muslim nation of Afghanistan, all mujahideen, their families, and the families of the prisoners.

Guantanamo Bay prison inspectors considered him to have high "intelligence value" and at the same time emphasized that he should be imprisoned as someone considered a threat against the United States.
