Abdelilah Benkirane (aːbdˈɑlˈɑleː bˈon kˈirɑn) is a Moroccan politician and the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Morocco, also known as the Justice and Development Party. He was appointed as the Prime Minister of Morocco on 29 November 2011 and served in this position until 2017.
Biography
Abdelilah was born on 8 April 1954 in the Al-Akari neighborhood of Rabat, the capital of Morocco. He comes from a Sufi-leaning family involved in commerce. His mother, Miftaha, was a member of the Independence Party, and his father was interested in religious studies and Sufism. Benkirane began his religious education under his father's supervision and continued at Al-Qubibat School, and then at Al-Limon and Moulay Youssef high schools. He received his diploma in 1973 and obtained his bachelor's degree in physics in 1979. He was then appointed as a teacher at the Higher School of Teachers in Rabat and resigned from his position in 1988.
Activities
Benkirane began his political activity by joining the School Youth Group affiliated with the Independence Party, and then joined the National Union of Popular Forces Youth Group. In 1976, he joined the Islamist Youth Organization and quickly rose in rank within the structure of this Islamist group. In 1981, he separated from the Islamist Youth Organization along with other youths and established the "Islamic Group Movement", which had Muslim Brotherhood tendencies. In 1988, he changed the name of this movement to "Movement for Reform and Renewal" and in 1992, he established the "National Renewal" party. In 1998, the name of this party was changed to the "Justice and Development" party, and he was elected as a representative of the House of Representatives.
Party Leadership and Prime Ministership
Benkirane was elected as the Secretary-General of the "Justice and Development" party in 2008, and in the 2011 elections, this party achieved victory and he was appointed as Prime Minister. During his premiership, he faced many challenges, including criticism of the government's performance and economic issues. In 2016, he was dismissed by the King of Morocco due to inability to form a new government. After this dismissal, he continued his political and party activities, and in September 2021, he was elected as the new Secretary-General of the "Justice and Development" party.
Viewpoints
Benkirane believes in reforms within the political system and believes that cooperation with the monarchy is necessary to maintain the country's stability. He also emphasizes the importance of religion in politics and believes that power should be used to establish Islamic values.
