Biography
Abd al-Ghani bin Mustafa, bin Ahmed, bin Mustafa al-Tantawi was born in Damascus in 1919 CETemplate:Efn, where he studied, and his genius appeared at a young age. He was intelligent and obtained a PhD degree with ease.
Education
He studied mathematics at the University of Syria and graduated in 1938 CE, ranking first in all his studies. He was sent to France to obtain a PhD and studied at the Sorbonne University, benefiting from many professors. However, the outbreak of World War II prevented him from completing his studies. Since he was on vacation in Damascus, he could not return to Paris. He taught mathematics in Homs, then was appointed as a mathematics inspector in the Ministry of Education of Syria. He was sent again to Egypt and obtained two Master's and PhD degrees from there in 1952 CE, becoming the first person to obtain a PhD in this field in the Levant. After returning to Damascus, he taught at its university, and from 1960 to 1963 CE, he was sent to the University of Libya. Then, as a professor at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca, he was introduced to Saudi Arabia from 1978 to 1987 CE. He moved to King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah and continued teaching there until 1996 CE. He is the author of the book: (Principles of Mathematical Analysis). His older brother, the scholar and writer Sheikh Ali al-Tantawi, described him as follows: He was in Paris a model for the Muslim student and a model for the teaching of ethics.
Letter from His Brother
A letter from his brother Sheikh Ali al-Tantawi to him when he went to Paris on a scholarship. He was one of the mathematical geniuses; he was the first person to obtain the title of PhD in Mathematics in the entire Levant.
What Sheikh Ali al-Tantawi says in his letter to his brother: My brother, you are going to a bewitched country, and we seek refuge in God. Whoever goes there does not return unless he is a new creature and a human different from the one who left, his brain which is in him, his head and heart in his chest, and his tongue which is in him. It may change his children who are not yet born! Yes, by God, my brother, this is a situation that is more than what we have seen and know. Our children, brothers, and loved ones go and return to us as enemies. Our enemy, a soldier for our colonization. I do not mean the colonization of the country, but I mean the colonization of minds with pseudo-science, hearts with the art of obscenity, tongues in otherness... Take care of yourself and seek help from God, for you are reaching a people most of whom do not have chastity, purity, or honor. You will see women in the streets, sidewalks, and passages who display themselves as commodities; Western civilization has humiliated, corrupted, and degraded them; they only eat their bread soaked in blood... So beware that a woman among them seduces you from your chastity and religion, or due to her deceptive appearance, destroys your beauty... .
Death
Finally, in 2005 CE, he died in Syria.
