Abdul Karim Obeid (Arabic: عبد الكريم عبيد), known by the kunya "Abu Sajid", is the Deputy Head of the Executive Council of Hezbollah, a member of Hezbollah's Central Council, and its Social Deputy. He is the standard-bearer of the struggle against the Zionist regime following the martyrdom of Sheikh Ragheb Harb. He was abducted by Zionists due to his activities and promotional sit-ins against the occupiers in his hometown of Jebchit at dawn on Friday, 28 July 1989, and was released on 29 January 2004, corresponding to 9 Bahman 1382 SH, after enduring 14 years, 11 months, and 1 day of captivity in a prisoner exchange between Hezbollah and Israel.

Biography

Sheikh Abdul Karim Obeid was born in 1957 AD in the village of Jebchit, the symbol of resistance and the homeland of Sheikh Ragheb Harb[1].

Education

Obeid began his preliminary education in his hometown village of Jebchit, then went to Beirut to continue his studies and entered the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Lebanese University, where he studied for 3 years. He then worked in one of the engineering centers. However, in 1979 AD, he suddenly changed his life path and went to Qom in the Islamic Republic of Iran, entering the Hawza.

Return to Lebanon

Sheikh Obeid returned from Qom to his hometown village of Jebchit in 1983 AD.

Protest against Ragheb Harb's Arrest

Abdul Karim Obeid's return to his hometown coincided with the arrest of Sheikh Ragheb Harb by the Zionist regime. At this stage, Sheikh Obeid led the sit-in of the people of Jebchit in the Hussainiya of this city for 17 days. This sit-in, which was held in protest of the arrest of Sheikh Ragheb Harb, resulted in his release. That period was the crystallization of the bond between the two Sheikhs in the struggle against occupying forces and confrontation with the Zionist iron fist policy, which was later broken by the iron will of the resistance.

Raising the Flag of Struggle against Israel

Following the martyrdom of Sheikh Ragheb Harb on 6 February 1984, Sheikh Obeid took up the flag of struggle and continued Sheikh Ragheb Harb's path in confronting the occupiers. He made leading sit-ins, pursuing promotional activities, and holding Friday prayers his priority, coming under pressure from Zionists and being arrested in 1984.

Abduction by Zionists

At dawn on Friday, 28 July 1989, the village of Jebchit lost its Imam and Sheikh, who was abducted by the Zionists. A smiling and luminous figure whose movements and demeanor revealed the lights of faith, piety, and steadfastness. His pulpit fell silent, and his five children experienced the bitterness of separation from their father. They grew up hoping to meet their imprisoned father, but the grief of separation from their father also grew and became greater with them. The occupiers linked Sheikh's fate with the fate of Ron Arad, the missing Israeli pilot, and prevented the International Red Cross from meeting Sheikh Obeid and obtaining news of his condition in prison. Only during the trial of Sheikh Obeid and Mustafa Dirani was an image of them broadcast. The Zionists only allowed the sending of 2 letters to his family; the first letter was sent in 1996, and the second letter was sent to the Sheikh's daughter a few weeks before his release. Sheikh Obeid was the Imam and leader of Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners in prison, encouraging them with his words and boosting their morale, emphasizing that the bright morning of freedom would eventually arrive. During his entire captivity of nearly 15 years, except for special days, he fasted, and during this period, he completed the Quran over 700 times, authored ten books, and composed twenty thousand verses of poetry[2].

Release from Captivity

Sheikh Obeid was released on 29 January 2004, corresponding to 9 Bahman 1382 SH, after enduring 14 years, 11 months, and 1 day of captivity in a prisoner exchange between Hezbollah and Israel[3].

Thought and Viewpoint

Rapprochement and Unity at the Forefront of Efforts by Scholars of the Islamic World

Sheikh Abdulkarim Obeid attended the fourth day of the Qom Cultural Week in Nabatieh, present at the booth of the World Assembly for Approximation of Islamic Schools of Thought, and visited the works and spoke with the booth officials. During this visit, while appreciating the efforts of the Islamic Republic in supporting the Axis of Resistance, he stated: Today, the Islamic Republic of Iran, with its policies and support for resistance movements across the Islamic world (including both Shia and Sunni movements), has shown that it pursues unity among the Islamic Ummah in practice and is a supporter of all mujahid forces in this path, and rapprochement and unity of the Ummah must be at the forefront of the efforts of scholars of the Islamic world[1].

Resistance is the Continuation of the Path of the Islamic Revolution of Iran

Sheikh Abdulkarim Obeid, Social Deputy of Hezbollah Lebanon, at the ceremony honoring the martyr commanders of Hezbollah Lebanon in Tehran, said: We have chosen the path whose leadership belongs to Imam Khomeini and whose continuator is Ayatollah Khamenei. Sheikh Abdulkarim Obeid, Lebanese fighter and freed prisoner and Social Deputy of Hezbollah Lebanon, stated at this conference: This holy month coincided with the victory of the Islamic Revolution, a revolution that Imam Khomeini established and presented to all the people of the world. He continued: After the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, not only Iran but the entire world saw its blessings; in Palestine and Lebanon, against the enemy Israeli regime that occupied our land and killed our people, we also chose the path whose leadership belongs to Imam Khomeini and whose continuator is Imam Khamenei.

Iran Neutralizes American and Israeli Plots

Sheikh Obeid, at the ceremony honoring the martyr commanders of Hezbollah Lebanon, stated: The Islamic Revolution of Iran, which thwarted all the plots of the America and Israel, reached a high level in terms of technology, culture, and weaponry; when the oppressed of the world saw this revolution, they pinned their hopes and aspirations on it so that right and justice would spread from this revolution to the entire world. He stated: With this mindset, we also in Lebanon, with the start of the resistance in 1989, needed a reference and leadership of a jurist to continue the resistance to guide us, so Imam Khomeini told us Resist, for victory is yours. Abdulkarim Obeid added: The resistance moves based on the opinions and thoughts of scholars and Islamic intellectuals. Imam Khomeini founded the resistance, and after him, scholars such as Sheikh Ragheb Harb continued it. The belief of the leaders who guided the resistance is that the resistance must be based on Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist. He emphasized: The resistance that the enemy fears and is apprehensive of is the resistance based on the Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist, and we know that the enemy is in difficulty and pressure facing this resistance, and of course, their main concern is that the word of truth spreads throughout the world. The member of Hezbollah Lebanon continued: They are worried that it has been proven that Islam has global power, and they fear that the thought of Khaybar, Badr, and Karbala will be established. The enemy fears that this established thought will manage the world.

The Future War, A Decisive War

At the ceremony honoring the martyr commanders of Hezbollah Lebanon, he stated: I tell you if a war occurs, it will be a decisive war that will either end Israel or we will be defeated. Currently, our war and the Zionists is ongoing, but the final war requires either our existence or their existence; we want to live in security in the land of Lebanon. This exemplar of Lebanese resistance continued: Since 14 March 2006, we have maintained our readiness, of course, the enemy has also prepared itself, but enemies and friends all know that thanks to God and by the grace of the great Islamic Republic and by the grace of its great leadership Imam Khamenei, I tell the people of Iran that do not let any doubt or uncertainty enter yourselves; some want to cast doubt in your minds to discredit us, asking where our money goes, does it go to Lebanon? Palestine or the oppressed. This freed prisoner from the bonds of the Israeli regime stated: I tell you that the enemy, thanks to God, thanks to the Islamic Republic of Iran and with the support of the people in Lebanon and everything we dedicated in this path, if the Israeli enemy does not leave our land, in the future battle we will occupy the northern borders of Israel and know that if another battle occurs, our missiles will land in the heart of Israel. He stated: The future war will confirm the existence or non-existence of Israel, and both you and everyone will see that only pious people will reach the result and Israel is in the process of destruction, just as the slogan of Imam Khomeini and Imam Khamenei has been and is that Israel is a cancerous tumor and must be eliminated and Israel is absolute evil. Therefore, I tell you that future victory will cause all the holy lands of Palestine to be liberated[2].
