Ahmad Mahmoud Abu Duqqa, known by the kunya "Abu Hamza", was the Deputy Commander of the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and a designer and executor of missile operations for the Al-Quds Battalions. Due to his involvement in launching IEDs (improvised explosive devices) at Israeli tanks, designing and executing martyrdom operations, participating in the Guardian of the Walls and True Dawn operations, and supplying raw materials for the production and launch of missiles toward the occupied territories, he was martyred on 11 May 2023 (21 Ordibehesht 1402 SH). He was killed in his home in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, during a joint assassination operation conducted by the military and the Shin Bet intelligence service of the occupying regime of Jerusalem, amidst the Vengeance of the Free missile operation by the Al-Quds Battalions. He was martyred following commanders such as Khalil Bahtini, Tariq Ezzedine, and Jihad Ghannam.

Biography

Ahmad Mahmoud Abu Duqqa was born in 1973 in Khan Yunis.

Education

Ahmad grew up in an educated family with a strong interest in knowledge and science, studying computer engineering. His relatives graduated in fields such as medicine (specializing in neurosurgery) and accounting, while his daughters graduated in chemistry and mathematics from university[1].

Membership in the Islamic Jihad Movement

With the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000, Abu Duqqa quickly joined the ranks of the Al-Quds Battalions, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement. He served as an assistant alongside Khaled Mansour, who was martyred in August 2022 (Mordad 1401 SH) during the "Unity of the Arenas" battle (Unified Fronts).

Militant Activities

He believed in confronting the occupiers of Jerusalem and participated in repelling their attacks. In 2001, he was among the mujahideen who played a pivotal role in launching IEDs (improvised explosive devices) at an Israeli tank during the regime's incursion into the Al-Farahin area of Khan Yunis.

Design and Execution of Martyrdom Operations

Abu Duqqa participated in designing and executing martyrdom operations in Israeli settlements within the Gaza Strip until 2005.

Participation in Guardian of the Walls and True Dawn Operations

Abu Duqqa engaged extensively in designing and executing missile operations toward the occupied territories, participating in the firing of missile barrages during the "Guardian of the Walls" and "True Dawn" operations.

Supply of Raw Materials for Missile Production and Launch

Ahmad Abu Duqqa played a fundamental role in supplying materials necessary for the production and launch of missiles under his commander, Khaled Mansour, marking the beginning of the phase involving missile weaponry in the conflict against the occupiers of Jerusalem. He developed significant interest and expertise in this field, inspiring continued work within this framework; the immense impact of these missile capabilities is evident today. Indeed, Benjamin Netanyahu, the head of the occupying regime, boasted of the assassinations of Abu Duqqa and Ali Hassan Ghali due to their responsibility for missile attacks during the "Vengeance of the Free" battle[2].

Moral Characteristics

Ahmad Abu Duqqa was distinguished not only by his exceptional resistance performance but also by his outstanding human, familial, and social relations. Anyone facing hardship or in need would turn to him, and Abu Duqqa never disappointed them. He was always eager to obey his mother; although he was the middle child, his mother lived with him. He made great efforts to strengthen family ties and foster unity and empathy among relatives, friends, acquaintances, and youth, despite these individuals being geographically dispersed across seven different regions east of Khan Yunis.

Cultural Activities

He engaged quietly and unassumingly in charitable work, supported by wealthy family members, particularly those related to him by blood or marriage. The needy and the poor, trusting in his honesty and recognizing him as a social figure, turned to him to resolve their problems. These sincere and clandestine activities led to his recognition by all people in Khan Yunis Governorate and throughout the Gaza Strip. He was among those who remained faithful to the covenant they made with God, in accordance with the verse: Template:Quran-usc, and deserved to have his name recorded in the eternal chronicle[3].

Martyrdom

Ultimately, on 11 May 2023 (21 Ordibehesht 1402 SH), he was martyred in his home in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, during a joint assassination operation by the military and the Shin Bet intelligence service of the occupying regime of Jerusalem. This occurred during the Vengeance of the Free missile operation by the Al-Quds Battalions, which, according to Zionist admissions, managed to bypass the occupiers' Iron Dome, causing significant casualties and destruction, particularly to buildings and properties. He was martyred following commanders such as Khalil Bahtini, Tariq Ezzedine, and Jihad Ghannam.

Reactions

Following the martyrdom of a group of commanders from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement during Operation Thar al-Ahrar, the Al-Quds Brigades issued a statement expressing condolences and offering congratulations. The text of this message is as follows:

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, with all signs of jihad and victory, lost a group comprising 11 of its prominent leaders and mujahideen during the heroic battle of Thar al-Ahrar, in an assassination operation carried out by the treacherous enemy of the Zionist entity. They departed after a great jihadi journey that had an undeniable impact on the project of resistance and liberation. The uprising of our righteous martyrs confirms the existence of an inevitable equation and revolutionary consciousness among the heroes, surpassing anything that occurs in practice. Those who fought in the Battle of Thar al-Ahrar fulfilled their jihadi duty, believing that in response to a strike by the Zionist enemy aiming to break the Islamic resistance—which has continued through the pure blood of the martyrs—by assassinating commanders of the Al-Quds Brigades, two strikes must be returned. These martyrs are:

  1. The great commander martyr, Jihad Shaker al-Ghanam, aged 62, Secretary of the Military Council of the Al-Quds Brigades; date of martyrdom: May 9, 2023;
  2. The honorable martyr Khalil Salah al-Bahtini, aged 45, member of the Military Council and commander of the Northern Region of the Al-Quds Brigades; date of martyrdom: May 9, 2023;
  3. The honorable martyr Tariq Ibrahim Izz al-Din, aged 49, one of the military operations leaders in the Al-Quds Brigades in the West Bank, exiled from Jenin to Gaza City; date of martyrdom: May 9, 2023;
  4. The honorable martyr Iyad al-Abd al-Hasni, aged 52, member of the Military Council and head of the Operations Unit in the Al-Quds Brigades, resident of Gaza Governorate; date of martyrdom: May 12, 2023;
  5. The honorable martyr Ali Hassan Qali, aged 48, member of the Military Council and head of the Missile Unit of the Al-Quds Brigades, resident of Khan Yunis Governorate; date of martyrdom: May 11, 2023;
  6. The honorable martyr Ahmed Mahmoud Abu Duqqa, aged 43, Deputy of the Military Council and head of the Missile Unit of the Al-Quds Brigades, successor to Commander Ali Qali, resident of Khan Yunis Governorate; date of martyrdom: May 11, 2023;
  7. The field commander martyr Muhammad Walid Abd al-Al, aged 33, one of the officials of the Operations Unit in the Al-Quds Brigades, resident of Gaza Governorate; date of martyrdom: May 12, 2023;
  8. The mujahid martyr Aliyan Atta Abu Wadi, aged 37, a mujahid in the Missile Unit of the Northern Brigade of Gaza; date of martyrdom: May 11, 2023;
  9. The mujahid martyr Abd al-Halim Judat al-Najjar, aged 22, a mujahid in the Missile Unit of the Northern Brigade of Gaza; date of martyrdom: May 11, 2023;
  10. The mujahid martyr Sa'id Jawad Farwana, aged 28, a mujahid in the Security Service of the Al-Quds Brigades in the Khan Yunis Brigade; date of martyrdom: May 9, 2023;
  11. The mujahid martyr Wail Sabri al-Agha, aged 34, a mujahid in the Armored Unit of the Bayt al-Maqdis Brigades, Khan Yunis Brigade; date of martyrdom: May 9, 2023.

They departed to their Lord after a life filled with charity, jihad, sacrifice, and devotion in the path of God. Each martyr played a clear role in the project of resistance and liberation, and this brilliance shall continue. The blood of our martyrs will remain a shining light for the mujahideen on the path of honor and dignity. The path to Bayt al-Maqdis and Al-Aqsa, once liberated, and the assassination of commanders, will not halt the path to Jerusalem and the resistance brigades; rather, their blood will be the source of continued confrontation and struggle until liberation and return. We pledge to them and to all the martyrs that, at any cost, we shall follow their path in advancing the resistance[4]. Jihad leads either to victory or martyrdom. The Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, Sunday, 24 Shawwal 1444 AH, corresponding to May 14, 2023 CE. Furthermore, in response to the assassination of these leaders, the Al-Quds Brigades launched missile strikes, including long-range missiles reaching Tel Aviv. Despite the Iron Dome system and all fortifications and shelters where settlers had taken refuge, these missiles killed and wounded several usurping settlers. These scenes, unprecedented during the occupation era, caused significant resonance and confusion within the internal front and across all levels of the occupation[5].
