Hamas was founded in 1987 by Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi and Mohammad Taha during the first intifada as the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas has carried out numerous suicide bombings, rocket attacks and military assaults against Israeli soldiers.
