Ali al-Zaidi is an Iraqi capitalist, economist, and technocrat who was introduced as the candidate for Prime Minister of Iraq by the Coordination Framework coalition on 27 April 2026 CE, and was tasked by Nizar Amidi, the President of Iraq, to form a new cabinet. Prior to entering politics, al-Zaidi has a long background in the private sector, banking, and economic management, and if he assumes the position of Prime Minister, he will become the youngest Prime Minister in the history of Iraq.

Biography

Ali al-Zaidi was born in Dhi Qar Province in southern Iraq in 1986 CE. He pursued his studies in law, finance, and banking, holding a Bachelor's degree in Law, and Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Finance and Banking. Some sources also indicate that he holds a PhD in Public Law. Al-Zaidi is known as a technocrat figure without direct political background, having gained extensive executive and managerial experience in the private sector.

Activities

Al-Zaidi has diverse records in managing economic, educational, and medical institutions, including the following:

  • Chairman of the National Holding Company: He heads a large private investment group that owns and manages numerous companies with various activities.
  • President of South Iraq Bank: He has a history of presiding over one of the country's important banks.
  • President of Al-Shaab University: Al-Zaidi has served as the head of a private university in Baghdad.
  • Management of Medical Institutions: He also has experience managing the "Ishtar Medical" institute.
  • Legal and Financial Records: He possesses multiple experiences in legal, financial, and executive fields.

Unlike many other Prime Ministerial candidates who had long political backgrounds, al-Zaidi has never held an official political or government position, and his name was only raised about a month ago as a solution to exit Iraq's political deadlocks.

Mission to Form Government

Selection and Mission

Following long-term political deadlocks in Iraq after the 2025 CE parliamentary elections, and despite the failure of previous candidacies such as "Nouri al-Maliki" (due to American opposition) and "Bassem al-Badri", the Coordination Framework (Shia coalition) finally reached an agreement. Nouri al-Maliki submitted a list including three candidates, among whom the name of Ali al-Zaidi was accepted by the camp of Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani.

On 27 April 2026, Nizar Amidi, the President of Iraq, tasked al-Zaidi as the candidate of the majority faction to form the new government. Amidi called on political currents to support al-Zaidi to accelerate the realization of constitutional duties. "Heibat al-Halbousi", the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, also welcomed this mission.

Programs and Viewpoints

In his first statement after receiving the mission, al-Zaidi emphasized his decision to cooperate with all political currents to form a government responsive to citizens' demands. His programs focus on the following:

  • Structural Reforms: Carrying out comprehensive reforms in the body of the government.
  • Economic Development: Achieving sustainable economic development and stabilizing oil revenues.
  • Youth Participation: Activating youth in society and creating effective communication channels between the education system and the labor market.
  • International Status: Transforming Iraq into a balanced and influential country at the regional and international levels.

Al-Zaidi announced that addressing internal and external challenges, including security tensions arising from regional disputes (particularly between America and Iran), is among his work priorities. He has a 30-day deadline to form the cabinet and present it to the Parliament to gain a vote of confidence.
