He is the former president of the Change Front and the former president of the Movement of Society for Peace (Hamas)[1] and former vice-president of the Global Forum of Muslim Parliamentarians[2]. Menasra is recognized as one of the key figures in Algeria's politics and currently holds the presidency of the Global Forum of Muslim Parliamentarians[3].

Biography

Abdelmadjid Menasra was born on 18 March 1964 (CE), in the city of Batna in Algeria, and completed his primary and secondary education in the same city. Afterwards, he moved to Boumerdes and in 1987 (CE), obtained a state engineering degree in mechanical industries.

Career

From 1987 to 1990 (CE), Menasra worked as a lecturer in mechanical engineering, and during this time managed the newspaper Al-Naba, the official organ of the Movement of Society for Peace. Following the 1991 (CE) coup, he was elected as a member of the Transitional National Council and from 1994 to 1997 (CE), served as the vice-president of this council. He also served as the Minister of Industry and Reconstruction from June 1997 to June 2002 (CE), and since 2002 (CE), has been active as a member of the National People's Assembly. To preserve the unity of the Movement of Society for Peace after the death of Mahfoud Nahnah, he refrained from changing the statute of the National Office to lead the Movement himself. He also participated in periods of National Dialogue and strove with his like-minded colleagues to establish the "Presidential Coalition".

Departure from Hamas Movement

After Aboujerra Soltani assumed leadership of the Movement, Menasra, due to internal differences, along with 30 other figures, established the "Movement of Invitation and Change" and on 18 February 2012 (CE), assumed leadership of its political wing[4].

Participation in Elections

Following the Islamic Awakening (Arab Spring), Abdelmadjid Menasra, along with a number of resigned leaders from the Movement of Society for Peace, established the Change Front party. The Change Front participated in the 2012 (CE) parliamentary elections and secured 4 seats in the National People's Assembly.

Reunification with Hamas

On 26 March 2013 (CE), Hamas and the Change Front announced a preliminary agreement to begin negotiations for unity. This unity was officially announced on 14 January 2017 (CE), and on 1 July 2017 (CE), the Change Front was dissolved and joined the Movement of Society for Peace[5].
