Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib was one of the martyrs of Karbala, who entered the battlefield after Ubayd Allah ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far and was martyred[1].

Life

Abd al-Rahman was the son of Aqil ibn Abi Talib[2] and his mother was "Umm Walad"[3]. Since he was tall, he was called "Ramh Aqili" (Aqili's Spear)[4].

Abd al-Rahman married Khadijah, the daughter of Imam Ali (peace be upon him)[5] and had two children from her named Sa'id and Aqil[6].

Battle on the Day of Ashura

He went to the battlefield on the Day of Ashura after his brother Ja'far and recited the following rajaz:

أَبِي عَقِيلٌ فَاعْرِفُوا مَكَانِي‏ مِنْ هَاشِمٍ وَ هَاشِمٌ إِخْوَانِي كُهُولُ صِدْقٍ سَادَةُ الْأَقْرَان‏ هَذَا حُسَيْنٌ شَامِخُ الْبُنْيَانِ وَ سَيِّدُ الشُّيَّبِ مَعَ الشُّبَّان

"My father is Aqil, from the lineage of Hashim, and the Banu Hashim are my brothers. So know my place; they are truthful elders and peers of the great. This is Husayn, lofty in stature, and the master of the old and the young."

Abd al-Rahman killed seventeen cavalrymen[7]. Finally, he was martyred by Uthman ibn Khalid al-Juhani and Bishr ibn Sawt al-Hamdani.

In Ziyarat Nahiyah

"Peace be upon Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil, may God curse his killer and shooter, Uthman ibn Khalid ibn Ashyam al-Juhani"[8].

According to Ziyarat Nahiyah, he was shot by Uthman ibn Khalid ibn Ashyam al-Juhani and attained the grace of martyrdom[9].

Some documents have recorded his noble age at the time of martyrdom as 35 years[10]. It is honor enough for him that peace and greetings have been sent upon him in Ziyarat Nahiyah Muqaddasah[11].
