Jasser Auda is among the scholars and thinkers of Maqasid al-Sharia, holder of the Imam al-Shatibi Chair at Al-Salam al-Alami University in South Africa, President of the Maqasid Institute, which is an international research center registered in the United States of America. He is a Professor of Islamic Law at Carleton University, Canada, and a founding member and board member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the North American Fiqh Council, member of the European Fiqh and Research Council, associate of the Islamic Fiqh Academy of India, and Secretary-General of the Foundation for Youth Thought Awakening.

He received a PhD in Islamic Legislation Philosophy from the University of Wales, UK, and a PhD in Systems Analysis from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in addition to memorizing the Quran and initial studies in Hadith, Fiqh, and Origins in the circles of Al-Azhar Mosque, Cairo. Previously, he was the founding director of the Maqasid al-Sharia Research Center and Deputy Director of the Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics in Doha, and also a professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada, Alexandria University, Egypt, International University of Sarajevo, Bosnia, College of Islamic Studies (Qatar), and American University of Sharjah. He has lectured on Islam, its legislation, and ethics at dozens of universities and institutions around the world and has twenty-five books in Arabic and English, some of which have been translated into more than twenty languages.

Birth and Education

He was born in November 1966, memorized the Quran at school and university, and studied Fiqh, Hadith, and Usul in the circles of Al-Azhar Mosque, Cairo. He successfully completed formal educational stages and learned English and French languages at Dar al-Tarbiya School, Cairo.

He then pursued independent study in the study circles of Al-Azhar Mosque between (1984 to 1990), memorized the Quran according to the narration of Hafs from Asim, and there read the books of Bukhari, Fath al-Bari, Muslim with Sharh al-Nawawi, Shafi'i Fiqh (text of Qalyubi and Umayra), Isnad and Takhrij, and Comparative Usul al-Fiqh.

He received a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Cairo University (1988), a Bachelor's in Islamic Studies from the American Islamic University, Michigan (2001), a PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Wales, UK, a PhD in Systems Analysis from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and a Master's in Comparative Fiqh from the American Islamic University in Michigan.
