Bashar al-Assad born 11 September 1965 is a Syrian politician who was elected as President of Syria on 17 July 2000. He is the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Armed Forces and the General Secretary of the Syrian Ba'ath Party. His father, Hafez al-Assad, was the President of Syria from 1971 to 2000.
Personal life
He was born in 1965 in the city of Damascus. After finishing school, Bashar chose the field of medicine at Damascus University and graduated in 1988, starting work at a military hospital. He then went to England in 1992 for further studies and obtained a specialty degree in ophthalmology in 1994. In addition to Arabic, he is fluent in English, French, and Spanish. Bashar al-Assad's wife is named Asma, and they have three children. His son Hafez, participating in the Syrian team at the 2016 International Mathematical Olympiad, successfully obtained an Honorable Diploma with 13 points[1].
Hafez al-Assad, his father, passed away in 2000 at the age of 69.
2014 Syrian presidential election candidacy
On 28 April 2014, Bashar al-Assad registered to participate in the Syrian presidential election (2014)[2] and on 4 May 2014, his eligibility and that of two others, Maher Hajjar and Hassan al-Nouri, was confirmed. Bashar al-Assad was finally re-elected President of Syria for a third seven-year term with 88.7 percent of the votes[3].
