Ingrid Mattson is a Canadian Muslim with a PhD in Islamic Studies and a political activist in North America.
Birth and Education
She was born on August 24, 1963, in Ontario. She studied philosophy at the University of Waterloo and received her PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago in 1999.
Academic Career
She served as a professor of Islamic Studies and Director of the Macdonald Center for Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut.
Social Activities
Between 1987 and 1988, she volunteered in Pakistan providing aid to Afghan refugees.
Political Activities
In 2001, she was elected Vice President of the Islamic Society of North America, and subsequently in 2006, she was elected its President; this organization is one of the most prominent Islamic organizations in the United States.
Social Standing
Mattson is highly respected in religious and political circles in the U.S. and was a distinguished guest at several U.S. Department of State events. She delivered speeches at the religious service of the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver and at the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama on January 20, 2009.
