Anas Hassan Khattab, known as "Abu Abdul Aziz" and referred to by members of al-Nusra as "Khal (Uncle)", was one of the most prominent founders of al-Nusra Front.

Background

He was among those who migrated from Iraq to Syria concurrently with the onset of the popular uprising in Syria in 2011. Following al-Julani and Abu Maria al-Qahtani, he was recognized as the third-ranking figure within the Front, eventually assuming leadership of its northern sector.

Abu Abdul Aziz possessed an extensive jihadist background spanning nearly a quarter of a century. He initially engaged in combat during the Soviet–Afghan War alongside Sheikh Abdullah Azzam. Subsequently, he moved to Iraq, where he fought alongside Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. His militant activities later led him to Syria, where he was ultimately killed[1].
