Biography
Scott Morrison was born on 13 May 1968 in the Waverley suburb of Sydney, Australia. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Economic Geography from the University of New South Wales.
Career
Before entering politics, he served as the Director of the New Zealand Office of Tourism and Sports from 1998 to 2000 and as the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Australia from 2004 to 2006. He also held the position of Director of Foreign Affairs for the Liberal Party of New South Wales from 2000 to 2004. Morrison was first elected to the House of Representatives in the 2007 federal election. Following the 2010 election, he was appointed to the opposition shadow ministry. After the Coalition's victory in the 2013 election, Morrison became the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection in Tony Abbott's government. In this role, he was responsible for implementing Operation Sovereign Borders, a key Coalition policy. In a cabinet reshuffle in December 2014, Morrison was appointed Minister for Social Services. When Malcolm Turnbull replaced Tony Abbott as Prime Minister, Morrison was promoted to the position of Treasurer in September 2015.
Views
Scott Morrison leads the radical wing of the Liberal Party and holds far-right tendencies; that is, he is more extreme and further to the right than the moderate Malcolm Turnbull. This is evidenced by his pursuit of the "Sovereign Borders" policy against migrants arriving in Australia by sea during his tenure as Minister for Immigration in 2013 and 2014. Morrison's immigration policies during this short period led to his recognition as an anti-immigration figure. By implementing the "Operation Sovereign Borders" plan, aimed at preventing migrants from reaching Australian soil via sea, he tasked the Royal Australian Navy with inspecting vessels and returning asylum seekers to their point of departure, which was predominantly Indonesia. His party has acted entirely in line with US policies globally and has taken harsh stances regarding the Muslim minority in Australia[1]. Furthermore, claiming that US President Trump showed restraint regarding the attack on the Aramco facilities, he supported joining the US maritime coalition against Iran and the Axis of Resistance, announcing that the country would join the US-led maritime coalition intended to protect ships and oil tankers transiting the Persian Gulf. He accused Tehran of engaging in "destabilizing behaviors," stating: "These destabilizing behaviors pose a threat to Australia's interests in the region"[2][3].
