Asad Qaiser (born 15 November 1969)[1] is a politician from Pakistan. He was elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan in August 2018.


Birth and education

Qaiser was born on 15 November 1969 in the Swabi District of Pakistan[2]. According to The Express Tribune, he was born on 15 November 1968 in Marghuz[3]. He received his early education at the Government High School in Marghuz. He later graduated from the University of Peshawar[4]. He also graduated from the Government Postgraduate College (Swabi) and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree[5].

After graduating in 1995, he became the head of the youth wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan.


Political life

Qaiser began his political career with Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan[6]. He was elected in 1984 as a candidate of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam from the Kotta Kotta constituency in Swabi, where he served for two years[7].

He joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after its formation in 1996[8]. In the same year, he was appointed as the regional president of PTI. In 2008, he became the president of PTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a position he held until 2013[9]. He was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan as a PTI candidate from the Swabi constituency in the 2013 Pakistani general election. He received 48,576 votes, defeating Ataullah Khan, the candidate of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam. In the same election, he was also elected to the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a party candidate from Swabi. He secured 14,165 votes, defeating Sajjad Ahmed, the candidate of the Muslim League. On 30 May 2013, he was unanimously elected as the 14th Speaker of the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa[10].

He was re-elected to the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a PTI candidate from the Swabi constituency in the 2018 Pakistani general election. Qaiser received 31,658 votes, defeating Gul Zamin Shah, the candidate of the Awami National Party[11]. In the same election, he was again elected to the National Assembly as a PTI candidate from Swabi[12]. He secured 78,970 votes, defeating Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman[13]. Following his election, he resigned from his provincial assembly seat in favor of his National Assembly seat[14].

On 10 August 2018, he was nominated by PTI for the speakership of the National Assembly of Pakistan[15]. On 15 August 2018, he was elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan. He received 176 votes against 146 votes cast for Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah[16].
