Ahmad Zaharani was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Afghanistan. During the month of Ramadan in the year 1406 AH, he endeavored to uphold and emphasize the true nature of jihad in Afghanistan; accordingly, he entered Afghanistan and was welcomed by a group of mujahideen.
The Young Mujahid Through the Eyes of Others
Regarding him, it is said: He joined the ranks of the mujahideen and became an exemplar of obedience to God, waking his brothers for prayer at dawn. The area where Ahmad operated militarily was close to enemy lines, with only a short distance separating him from communist centers. Sensitive military operations commenced in this dangerous region. One of those present asked Ahmad: "What if the enemy attacks this area with aircraft, bombs, and missiles? Will you retreat?" He replied: "God willing, we will confront them." Another remarked: "It is the most powerful force on earth." Ahmad responded: "God is mightier than that." Alongside fighting the enemies, he was among the greatest preachers within the ranks of the mujahideen, explaining Islamic jurisprudence to them and elucidating the status of jihad, thereby daily increasing their spiritual insight. He was described as an individual of high spirit and grandeur. Among the mujahideen, he would recite the Quran with a beautiful voice, prepare his brothers with revolutionary anthems, and lead them in prayer. In return for this affection, he would ask them to pray for his martyrdom, which was his sole hope in life.
His friends regarded him as the embodiment of the noble verse: Template:Quran text; "Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance."
Martyrdom
On the morning of Friday, 19 Sha'ban 1407 AH, corresponding to 27 Farvardin 1366 SH, he passed by a group of youths engaged in conversation and jest, telling them: "Do not forget to recite Surah Al-Kahf." The mujahideen formed ranks like a solid structure to carry out the largest military operation against the enemy. The entire group proceeded and, at sunset, opened fire on enemy gatherings and logistical centers. Fierce battles ensued, and he attained martyrdom.
