National Islamic Alliance
National Islamic Alliance, or "al-Tahalf al-Islami al-Watani", is a Shia movement active in Kuwait established to organize and strengthen Shias and combat the political influence of other groups. This alliance is recognized as one of the important Shia organizations in Kuwait and plays an active role in the political arena of this country[1].
History
The National Islamic Alliance emerged in the shadow of the political space following the military occupation of Iraq against Kuwait in 1990. This alliance was formed as a political framework for Shia political, social, and religious forces, and despite political differences, managed to accommodate various groups within itself[2].
Establishment of the Alliance
The National Islamic Alliance was established following the increase in political activities of Shias and the necessity of creating a united institution to represent their interests. This alliance was formed with the aim of creating convergence among opposing Shia groups and strengthening their political position in Kuwait[3].
Organizational Structure
The organizational structure of the National Islamic Alliance includes:
- Central Council;
- Executive and political offices;
- Various committees for organizing activities[4];
- Imam Hassan (AS) Seminary and Al-Kout Satellite Television Network are among the subsidiaries of this organization.
Periods
The National Islamic Alliance has gone through several periods of activity so far:
- First Period: Establishment and formation of the alliance;
- Second Period: Expansion of activities and increase in the number of representatives in the National Assembly;
- Third Period: Strengthening the political and social position of Shias in Kuwait[5].
Leadership
Hojjat al-Islam wal-Muslimin Sheikh Hussein Motouq is currently the Secretary-General of this organization and holds the leadership of the alliance, which is close to Islamic Republic of Iran.
Political Activities
The National Islamic Alliance plays an active role in the Kuwait National Assembly elections and strives to send Shia representatives to the parliament by introducing its candidates. This alliance also promotes and strengthens Shia positions in Kuwaiti society by holding conferences and meetings. As an effective force in Kuwaiti politics, this alliance seeks to strengthen Shia positions and create unity among them. Given its history and activities, this alliance has played an important role in the political and social developments of Kuwait.
