Located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, the Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF) is an intellectual movement and think tank dedicated to empowering youth and fostering Muslim intellectual dialogue.
History
Established by Dato Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa[1], the IRF was officially launched by Tariq Ramadan on December 12, 2009. The organization has made significant efforts to engage in discussions within Malaysia and internationally to advocate for democracy, freedom, and social justice.
Vision and Mission Statement
Vision
The Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF) aspires[2] to:
- Promote Islamic Reform (Islah) and Renewal (Tajdid) suited for a modern, pluralistic society;
- Revive the vibrancy of Muslim intellectual discourse within Malaysia;
- Contribute to the building of an inclusive and equitable Malaysian nation.
Mission Statement
Through our initiatives, we aim to: 1. Provide the most relevant information on issues aligned with IRF’s vision for Malaysia. 2. Deliver comprehensive analyses of policies that foster peace and harmony. 3. Enhance our understanding of a compassionate and democratic form of Islam. 4. Sustain, nurture, and expand our network of like-minded individuals, corporations, NGOs, governments, and other entities to effectively disseminate our analyses and viewpoints. 5. Promote intercultural understanding and encourage civilizational dialogues both in Malaysia and abroad.
Objectives
As described, the organization seeks to champion democracy, individual freedom, and social justice through public intellectual discussions in Malaysia and beyond. To achieve this, the Islamic Renaissance Front frequently organizes public events aimed at countering oppressive and intolerant interpretations of Islam , advocating instead for a progressive, democratic understanding of the faith that respects human rights within Malaysia's diverse society.
Conclusion
IRF amplifies voices of reason and compassion while striving to liberate the Muslim intellect from strict orthodoxy and conservatism. The organization is committed to the revival and reform of Islamic thought to empower the Ummah to address current challenges more effectively, ultimately contributing to the progress and well-being of all.
