His father, Sayyed Abdul Aziz Hakim, was a politician and an influential cleric in the period following the fall of the [[Saddam Hussein]] regime in Iraq. His uncle, [[Sayyed Muhammad Baqir Hakim|Sayyed Muhammad Baqir Hakim]], was a prominent figure of the Iraqi opposition against the [[Ba'athist regime|Ba'ath regime]] and one of the prominent [[Shia]] clerics of Iraq. His grandfather, Sayyed Muhsin Tabatabai Hakim, was the most prominent religious authority of the [[Shia Muslims]] in the world during his time. He is also affiliated through his mother with the Sadr family, one of the famous Shia families in [[Iran]], [[Iraq]], and [[Lebanon]]. He is the son-in-law of his uncle Sayyed Muhammad Baqir Hakim.

On July 24, 2017, by announcing his separation from the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, he established the Iraq National Wisdom Movement and at the meeting of the founding board of this movement on December 1, 2017, he was elected as its president. On September 5, 2016, he was elected as the president of the Iraqi National Alliance (al-Itilaf al-Watani al-Iraqi), the largest political bloc in the Iraqi Parliament.
