Fahd bin Abdulaziz, King of Saudi Arabia, was born in 1923 CE in Riyadh and was one of the seven sons of Abdulaziz, the founder of Saudi Arabia. He completed his primary education at the Princes' School and began his political career in 1953 CE as the Minister of Education, becoming the Minister of Interior in 1962 CE. Fahd began his career in his youth as an assistant to his brother, King Faisal, who was the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time. Following the assassination of King Faisal in 1975 CE, his brother King Khalid ascended the throne as King of Saudi Arabia, and Fahd was appointed as Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Minister. In 1982 CE, he succeeded King Khalid as the King of Saudi Arabia. Fahd's reign was accompanied by extensive Saudi activities in international affairs. During the occupation of Kuwait by Iraq, he supported the attack by international coalition forces to liberate Kuwait and allowed American forces to be stationed on Saudi soil. Due to old age and numerous illnesses, Fahd underwent surgery several times and died in 2005 CE in a hospital in Riyadh. After his death, the kingship was passed to his brother, King Abdullah.
